Unique communication
system aims to increase ORV safety
For the first time, ORV riders can
use a device to monitor oncoming traffic and send
distress signals

(Proximity Location Device) |
Grand Rapids, MI (8/1/2006) - The off-road
vehicle (ORV) industry may soon be able to report better
safety figures thanks to the debut of the industry’s
first ORV-to-ORV collision avoidance and situational awareness
device called the PLD™ (Proximity Location Device).
The PLD™ uses previously undiscovered resources
within the global communications network to provide a
total communications system for ORV riders that, until
now, hadn’t existed.
The PLD™ allows ORV riders to track oncoming
traffic, monitor riders within a group, talk to group
riders and transmit distress signals. Because of its
patented technology, the device can be easily installed
and operated on any off-road vehicle including snowmobiles,
all-terrain vehicles, dirt bikes and personal watercrafts.
The technology of the PLD™ is a creation of
PatentWorks Incorporated of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
PatentWorks is a patent development company and is pursuing
its patent rights in the PLD™ technology.
“Because of its patented technology, the PLD™
is the first total communications system for ORVs,”
says PatentWorks President Jim Fields. “It is
the solution to the growing safety concerns that riders
and industry suppliers have been looking for,”
Fields adds. “We’re very excited to be in
discussions with all of the major OEM manufacturers
and a major aftermarket distributor that see the value
in this pioneering device.”
PatentWorks officials strongly believe that the PLD™
will greatly reduce the ORV accident and injury trends
reported by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The Commission reports that approximately 110 people
die each year while riding snowmobiles and 13,400 emergency
room-treated injuries are the result of snowmobile accidents.
The ATV quad industry reports 111,000 injuries per year.
The PLD™ has four primary features: |
- Collision Avoidance
The PLD™ monitors and notifies the rider
of all approaching PLD™-equipped traffic
from every direction in a 3-mile radius.
- Situational Awareness
The PLD™ monitors a group of riders and
notifies if a member is missing.
- Emergency Broadcast
With the emergency distress signal feature,
the PLD™ provides riders the comfort of
knowing that others in their broadcast range
will immediately be notified should an emergency
occur.
- Group Communication
With the use of a headset, the PLD™, with
its innovative communications capabilities,
allows groups to converse with other members
who are using a PLD™.
|
The PLD™ does not need any other infrastructure
to work. This means that no matter where a PLD™
is being used, it will broadcast and receive its proprietary
signal. Because it is simple to attach, any off-road
vehicle user can begin using it immediately.
The device can monitor other vehicles using PLDs™
for up to 3 miles in any direction. When activated,
the distress signal quickly transmits data such as location
and time of incident to each PLD™-equipped rider
within its 3 mile broadcast range using visual and audible
signals.
The PLD™ system is just the first of several
PatentWorks devices that use this new proprietary technology.
Additional applications are being developed that center
on the safety and security functions of several industries
and municipalities. Further, PatentWorks is currently
in discussions with several manufacturers regarding
production of future devices that use the PLD™
technology.
