AMA Supermoto Race @ Daytona
Bike Week
ATV Classes Added to the Race Schedule
New Smyrna, FL (2/19/2007)
– Fans of AMA Supermoto racing action will be
pleased to hear that the New Smyrna Speedway will
play host to AMA “Supermoto Madness” to
open the popular Bike Week festivities in March.
The March 5th AMA sanctioned Pro/Am
race, featuring a $10,000 pro purse, will showcase
three classes, including the premier Open Pro class,
Pro Lites (250) and a Pro ATV class. The AMA Supermoto
Madness event will mark the first time ever that this
new form of motorcycle racing, combining motocross,
dirt track and road racing, will be held during Daytona
Beach’s Bike Week festivities. The newly established
Pro/Am event and will likely draw several top pro’s
as they attempt to keep their skills sharp in the
off-season of the AMA Supermoto Championship, slated
to get under way in early summer.
“We’re confident the legions
of motorcycle enthusiasts that attend Bike Week will
put their bike allegiances aside and join in the fun
of this first-time event in Daytona,” said Joel
Grover, director of supermoto for the AMA. “From
the fun-loving big, bearded Harley guys and tattooed
chopper aces, to Japanese and European road bike riders,
AMA Supermoto clears the gap between road and dirt
racing and makes for a great afternoon/evening of
entertainment for everybody.”
Beginning with the Florida State Supermoto
Amateur Championships on Monday (March 5th) morning,
New Smyrna Speedway will be abuzz with action from
sun up through sundown on the popular ½ mile
asphalt oval. Track officials will then flick on the
lights and the pros will take to the track, beginning
at 7 p.m., for a battle under the stars that’ll
take racers at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour
on the 23 degree high-banks, then have them diving
precariously into the dirt infield where a host of
jumps, whoops and berms will try to rattle them off
their game!
“This is certainly a new event
for us and we’re really looking forward to the
hybrid concept of motocross, dirt track and road racing,”
said the Speedway’s Terry Roberts. “I
think AMA Supermoto is just out there enough that
it might peak the curiosity of even our most core
car racing enthusiasts.”
