Series Race Report: Round 6
Danny Shea #101 Takes the ATV
Open Pro Win
Lyman, ME (7/12/2007)
- Round 6 of the New England ATV Motocross
Series saw Columbia Motorsports sponsored rider Danny
Shea #101 taking home the Open Pro win at MX207 in
Lyman Maine this weekend with a 5-2 finish. There
was quite a bit of competition this weekend at MX207
as Canadian rider and points leader Jasmin Plante
#91 was not in contention this weekend.
Grabbing the 1st moto holeshot was Nac’s
rider Danny Lewis #621. Racing through the standing
water and deep mud Lewis was doing his best to stay
clean in front of Gabriels Racing’s #21 Tommy
Mofford, BCS/K&K’s #82 Matt Pomeroy, Baldwin
Motorsports #111 Nate Morello, and #11 Jake Hakala.
Mofford was not letting Lewis have any breathing room
by the 3rd lap and Pomeroy was gaining quickly and
would soon be putting additional pressure on the Nac’s
rider. Hakala pulled off the track with what looked
like engine problems, and with the condition of the
track it was to be expected that some quads would
not make it through the 6 brutal laps. The leading
3 riders began to pull a small gap on BCS/Muff’s
#47 Justin “Muff” Hoffler and #101 Danny
Shea who were riding fast and smooth. Nate Morello
began to drop back as his quad began smoking badly
and was making some interesting sounds as he went
around the track.
A bobble after the doubles left Lewis
momentarily suspended in the loose mud, and as Mofford
tried to slide around him he hit Lewis allowing Pomeroy
to sneak by both quads on the inside line and take
the lead. Lewis and Mofford wasted no time in getting
right back into rhythm with the #82 machine however
were not going to be able to get back in front unless
Pomeroy made a major mistake. As the white flag came
out the #21 of Mofford began to occasionally emit
streams of white smoke, but the quad stayed running.
Matt Pomeroy took his first checkers of the season,
followed by Lewis, Mofford, Hoffler, Shea, Halo/BCS
rider #40 Dave Payne, #748 Mike Pilotte (riding his
sister’s #838 400EX), and Morello.
The gate dropped for the 2nd moto and
again saw the #621 Honda of Danny Lewis with the holeshot.
Lewis was not able to hang on to the lead for long
as #111 Nate Morello and #21 Tommy Mofford quickly
passed him. The single-lined ‘S’ corners
after the whoop section proved to be detrimental to
Hoffler, Lewis and Pomeroy who were running 3rd, 4th,
and 5th when they became trapped in the first corner
and blocked up the track. The racers behind them were
forced to create new lines in the deep mud and even
cut the track to get around the stuck racers. Meanwhile
Morello and Mofford were able to put a considerable
lead on the rest of the group, trading spots about
midway through the 2nd lap. #748 Mike Pilotte benefited
the most from the ‘S’ corner wreck to
go from 7th to 3rd, although the #101 of Danny Shea
was not about to let him keep it and was on his rear
tires for a couple of laps. Matt Pomeroy brought his
quad to the finish line to wait and cross the checkers
at the end and avoid a DNF.
The battle for 1st was heating up as
Mofford was able to pull some breathing room in the
straights but Morello would be right back on him at
the corners and jumps. As the two passed the finish
line there was barely two feet between them. Rounding
the next corner Mofford took the next jump and a loud
pop was heard as his quad stalled. Morello bumped
him as the #21 came to a rolling stop. Mofford would
then push his quad to the finish line to wait behind
Pomeroy, while Morello continued to race without hassle.
Shea made his way around Pilotte to take over the
#2 spot and Dave Payne would have his best race yet
in 4th, although the determined Hoffler was catching
fast. As Morello came around he showed a little style
over the finish line to take the checkers, followed
by Danny Shea, Mike Pilotte, Dave Payne, Justin Hoffler
and Danny Lewis.
Danny Shea was able to take the overall
win, with Danny Lewis in 2nd and Nate Morello in 3rd.
Baldwin Motorsports rider Nate Morello #111 was able
to take the Open Pro points lead from Canadian rider
Jasmin Plante #91 this weekend. Plante was not in
contention this weekend and will not be at round 7
in New Hampshire.
Nac’s Racing rider Danny Lewis
#621 grabbed both Open Pro holeshots. Lewis grabbed
both Pro-Am holeshots and brought home $425 in holeshot
awards. Thanks goes out to Fred Johnson, a retired
Pro rider from Norwich Discount Oil, who donated and
extra $50 to the Pro-Am moto 1 holeshot award.
Round 7 will be held July 22nd atJolly
Roger Moto-sports Park in Lempster, New Hampshire.
