Lake Havasu, AZ (4/3/2009)
- Mike Cafro Racing’s Beau Baron took his
second Pro podium of the season, while Julie Russell
made this her third appearance on the Women’s
A podium.
Although the WORCS round three dead engine
start didn’t particularly agree with Beau
Baron, he had very impressive results over the
course of the 20 lap race. Baron put the hammer
down and began to charge his way through traffic,
moving up an incredible 10 positions within
three laps. Once closer to the front, Baron
soon found himself gaining on Doug Eichner who
was in third. In the tenth lap, baron made his
move to take away the number three spot. Baron
was able to hold that position for ten laps
to cross the finish line in third, which also
puts him in third for the points race. “The
track was really rough, and the jump crossing
the river was something else, but I knew I had
to do it if I wanted to make it on the podium.
I just wanted to stay consistent and get on
the podium so I have a shot at the championship,”
said Baron.
Also in the Pro ranks was MCR team manager,
Mike Cafro, whose top ten finish has him currently
ranked in seventh in points for the season so
far. “I was actually a little nervous
about the dead engine start at this round because
the last time I had to do one, it didn’t
go so well,” stated Cafro, who faired
quite a bit better than Baron, taking 5th off
the line. Cafro had a consistent run and by
maintaining a good speed and choosing smart
lines, he was able to finish in 8th place despite
the brutal track conditions that developed over
the course of the race.

Levi Marana, who is the third Pro racer on
the MCR team was absent from this weekend’s
main event. “Unfortunately, Levi fractured
his wrist during practice on Saturday,”
said Mike Cafro. Levi will have to undergo surgery
for his injury and at this time it is uncertain
when he will be able to race again.
Julie Russell, the only female member of the
MCR team, has really stepped things up this
season. Russell claimed a spot on the Women’s
A class podium for the third time in as many
races. The number 316 Honda flew off the line
to take the holeshot, and led briefly before
falling back to second. Russell stayed on the
gas and stayed in a close second all the way
to the checkered flag. Russell’s consistency
this season has her currently sitting in second
place of the points chase and only nine points
off of the lead.
With their strong performances this round,
the team is fired up and ready for round four
that will be held on May 1-3 in Milford, CA.
“We’re stoked to get Beau on the
podium this round,” Cafro said. “We’re
all really looking forward to round four and
hopefully with a little luck and consistent
finishes we could see a championship,”
Cafro concluded.
