Toutle, WA (6/24/2007)- The defending
WORCS ATV ProAm champion proved he can ride a variety
of terrain last weekend, riding on his win at the sweeping
grassy hills of Los Olivos CA to take another win in the
tight woods and technical motocross of Toutle WA.
In the Saturday afternoon Open A race, #1a Justin Waters
was second off the line on his Yamaha YFZ450 and fought
a good battle with local rider Ron Heath. When Heath turned
his fastest time on lap 2, Waters answered back with his
own fastest time on lap 3, beating Heath's time by more
than 20 seconds. At the end, it was Waters by about one
minute, taking his second consecutive win this season
in Open A.
"As the ruts got deeper, I could feel my LRD-prepped
motor and Kenda tires pulling hard to get me out of
the corners. I think that may have been the difference
for me today."
"And man, was I glad to have that Rekluse [clutch]
in there."
For Sunday's ProAm final, Waters was again out of the
gate well, leaving the MX infield in 5th position. By
the time they came out of the woods thirteen minutes
later, he was up to third. Then it was a matter of patience
and riding smart, taking advantage of every opportunity
and choosing the best lines through the trees and rocky
river bed sections.
"I didn't have the fastest lap like I always want
to, but I did run consistent times throughout the entire
90 minutes. I think conditioning has been key to several
of my wins this year, so it's great to see the work
paying off."
"Having my equipment work flawlessly has been
vital too. At the level of competition we have this
year, you can't afford even one failure. I think I finally
have a great lineup of products under me, and that confidence
lets me focus on doing my job out there."
After a rough start this year, Waters is gaining momentum
and now sits in second in the ProAm championship chase,
only 6 points back from leader Dillon Zimmerman, three
wins to Zimmerman's two. The title will come down to
not only podiums, but consistency for the final four
rounds.
