Holz Racing Wins BITD Vegas to Reno
Scott Kiger & Mark Holz Win Best in the Desert Vegas to Reno
Lynden, WA (8/20/2014) - Vegas to Reno, The longest
off-road race in the United States took off out of Beatty, NV on Friday,
August 15. With 40 UTVs lined up, they were one of the largest classes
and it was a class stacked with talent, proven competitiors and new
racers and cars entering this series. This class continues to grow and
the quality of cars that show up and number of new builds that show
continue to amaze many in the off-road industry.
With cooler than average temperatures and a desert that had recently
been scoured by uncharacteristic rain, the Polaris RZR XP 1000 of
Coastal/Holz Racing fresh off a solid, but unsatisfying second place
at the Silver State 300 was looking for redemption. The rain wreaked
havoc on the course making huge cross washes and sharp edged
washouts along the course. The Walker Evans shocks were going to
have their work cutout for them.

Scott Kiger & Mark Holz earned the win at the BITD Vegas to Reno with adjusted time |
Team owner Scott Kiger and co-driver Tyler King started off the line
in the 15th starting spot a little after 6:30 am and headed off into the
dust and sun. Kiger ran a solid morning. Battling blinding dust and a
field full of anxious racers, Scott drove his own race and worked the
orange #1934 Polaris RZR XP 1000 into the top 10 and then into the
top five by the time they rolled into Pit 6 at Millers for a planned fuel
stop and driver change.
Mark Holz and co-driver Rob Utendorfer, left out of Pit 6 and headed
out for the final 315 miles to Reno. After almost 5 hours of racing, multiple
teams were stacked up — and within minutes of each other. The
race was on. Through Pit 8 at rm 280, the #1934 had moved into third.
Through the Rawhide remote Pit # 13/rm 421, Holz sat 15 miles back
of the leading Polaris RZR of Jagged X’s Brandon Schueler. If there
was any hope of pulling a win, time was running out. With 100 miles to
go, it was time to dig deep and put the hammer down. With thirty miles
to go that gap was cut to 5 miles. And as the #1934 crossed the line,
the team was waiting to see the final time on course. Ending with a
11:18.03 the Coastal/Holz team edged out Jagged X by 55 seconds.
“This one goes out to the team and never giving up. We didn’t have the
best car or the best run today, but we had a team that dug deep and
wouldn’t quit. Thanks to our crew: Brian MacLean from Walker Evans,
Gil Flores, Tyson Leaver, Rick Pfeilsticker, Kelli, Ryan and Jeremy Holz
for chasing. And our sponsors Polaris, Walker Evans, GBC and Kroyer.
This class continues to progress by leaps and bounds. Two years ago
we won this race with in 11:41. We shaved over 23 minutes off that in
today’s win.” said Mark Holz.
Next up, RJ Anderson and Beau Baron will head to Glen Helen in
Devore, CA for Round #8 of the WORCS Series with their HRP/Polaris
RZR XP 1000s on September 13th. The Holz/Coastal RZR
XP will head back for a race prep and be ready for the Best in the
Desert Bluewater Desert Challenge in Parker, AZ on October 10th.
And the Coastal GNCC team will get their Polaris RZRs ready for
Round #5 at The ITP Powerline Park in Wheeling, West Virginia on
October 4th.
