Europe (4/28/2009) -A fantastic
revamped and reworked Tinkerhill Motocross Circuit
provided the setting for round two of the 2009
Ulster Premier Quadcross Championship at the weekend,
the hard working team at Quad Racing Ireland hosting
the event at Jim O'Brien's spectacular venue on
the outskirts of Newry. Having made a promising
start to the season with some outstanding results
at Ulster and British level, Justin Reid and Team
Can Am travelled the short distance
from their Comber base eager to move up the series
standings, but as they packed away the Team Can
Am DS450x MX after two action packed motos, Justin
had had a frustrating day with chain derailments
in both races curtailing his progress, Justin
nevertheless scoring a fantastic second moto 7th
despite his chain woes to move to 9th in the series
and just forty-two points behind the leader.

Race One
Despite heavy rain in the days prior
to the meeting, the hardpack circuit dried out
quickly as timed practice got underway, Justin
putting together a fantastic qualifying lap to
secure 4th pick of gate. A poor start by his standards
saw Justin round the first corner mid-pack in
the twenty-four strong field, but using the excellent
handling of the DS 450x MX Justin began to work
his way through the pack, completing the opening
lap of the twenty minute plus one-lap moto having
moved up to 9th. Choosing different lines to pass
in the more rutted parts of the circuit and with
the leaders in sight, Justin had moved up to 7th
on lap two when disaster struck, a large stone
bending the chain guide and derailing the chain.
Dropping to dead last as he worked trackside to
repair the problem as best possible with no tools,
Justin finally got underway but with the guide
damaged beyond repair the chain derailed twice
more during the moto, Justin pushing as hard as
conditions would allow to the chequered flag to
finish just outside the points.

Race Two
Slotting in to 10th as he headed around the first
corner and out on the first of thirteen laps,
Justin once again used the excellent Rotax powerplant
to blast his way through the pack in the early
stages, moving up to 7th as he broke the timing
beam for the first time before taking 5th on the
next lap. Lapping furiously while involved in
a four-way battle for 3rd, Justin was applying
tremendous pressure to pass when lady luck struck
another cruel blow, the chain once again derailing
after a rock hit the guide. Dropping back to 15th
as he fought to get underway, Justin set off at
a blistering pace and using the fantastic handling
of the PEP suspension attacked the circuit and
began to move up the leaderboard, Justin battling
through to 12th by the halfway point. Increasing
his relentless pace as the race progressed, Justin
continued to scythe his way through the field
to take the chequered flag for a fantastic 7th,
Justin amazingly setting the second fastest lap
of the moto on lap ten when the circuit was at
it's roughest and in traffic!
Justin Reid
'Today has been pretty disappointing
to say the least... the chain guide is my own
design and it worked perfectly all of last season
but today there were some really gnarly ruts with
big stones in them and I hit one hard enough to
bend the guide right around which pulled the chain
off the sprocket. It took ages to straighten it
- I had to find some big rocks at the side of
the track and sort of throw them at it to get
going again but I'd lost too much time to get
back into the points in the first moto. The start
of the second race was quite scary as I got hit
from behind and someone came over the side of
my quad. I was able to get away ok and was working
through the field well when I had to change line
and got hung up on another rut which bent the
guide and pulled the chain off again. I knew exactly
what to do this time though so didn't drop so
far back. I charged hard for the remainder of
the race and got some good laps in but there just
wasn't enough time to catch the leaders. It's
back to the drawing board now to redesign the
guide before the next race...'
