Cabo San Lucas (11/16/2007)
– The 40th annual Tecate SCORE Baja
1000 began its 40th year in Ensenada and wound through
the Baja peninsula ending in Cabo San Lucas. Honda,
who is one of the biggest supporters of the Baja
1000, took top honors with the overall win when
Team Honda’s Steve Hengeveld crossed the finish
line in Cabo San Lucas at 6:46am on Thursday. Despite
the grueling conditions of this legendary test of
man and machine, the Honda/Temecula Motorsports
team, consisting of Danny Prather, Mike Cafro, Levi
Marana, Marc Spaeth, and Dana Creech crossed the
finish line first in the ATV Pro class at 12:52pm.

The team made a miraculous come back after some
issues that forced them into a 2-hour deficit behind
the Factory Honda team. “About 75 miles in
we missed the Honda pit stop and ran out of gas,
which put us into 6th place.” Stated Mike
Cafro. “We worked out way up into 3rd place
and then ran out of gas again.” The team believes
their fuel issues were attributed to a float bowl
that was stuck open. “At the half way point
we were two hours off the leader. We gave it all
we had and just started chipping away at it, and
in the last 50 miles of the race, we took the lead.”
Cafro said. “Despite the gas issues, it went
really well. It was a roller coaster ride of a race,
but it was all worth it!” He concluded.

Tony
Baker's CanAm Team was also out of the race
early with an engine failure |
There were other racers that didn’t fair
as well as Cafro’s team. Hoyt Penland was
seriously injured when he crashed late Tuesday
night, leaving him in serious condition. At last
report, Penland was being transported to undergo
surgery for his injuries. The number 2a quad of
Josh Row was also set back when one of it’s
team members crashed and broke his leg. The worst
of crashes however, was not involving any racers,
but the chase helicopter for team #133, Warrior
Racing, which claimed the lives of the pilot and
co-pilot, who’s identities have not yet
been released.
The arduous race also proved to be too much for
the Sportsman UTV class as all of the teams were
taken out of contention before the end of the
race. Thomas Graves team was the one that made
it the farthest through the race, ending his run
at check point number 6 while the teams of Mark
Lindsay and John Crowley did not even make it
to the first check point before there machines
failed.
In the end, it was Honda/Temecula who took the
first place in the Pro Quad class, followed by
Wayne Matlock’s factory Honda team, while
Carmen Cafro’s (Mike Cafro’s brother)
team, also sponsored by Honda/Temecula Motorsports
took the third place finish. ATVriders will have
more coverage, updates and the complete race results
once they have been confirmed.
