Joe Byrd Brings Points Lead Into RedBud's Round Six
Byrd’s 21 points in front of Jeremy Lawson for o/a pro class points title

Buchanan, MI (5/8/2007) – If you were at RedBud for last year’s ITP/Moose ATV National Motocross Championship Series round – presented by Parts Unlimited – you might still be cleaning mud out of your quad.

By far the worst mudder in the last 15 years at RedBud according to track builder Tim Ritchie, some on-the-fly track modification and 550 riders later they’d pulled off the race – with a lot of muddy-faced smiles talking about the adventure in the pits afterwards.

“We were able to come up with a decent track despite the monsoon-like conditions, but it was pretty much soup anywhere else you went,” said Ritchie. “The amazing thing was that the riders and crews were smiling all weekend; they were having a ball!”

Always trying to keep things fresh, Ritchie, a skilled veteran track builder, re-designed the national track much to the delight of early season racers who’ve run it this year. RedBud hosted the District 14 ATV MX Series yesterday (May 6) as a perfect warm up to the ATV Nationals this weekend (May 12/13). The top local ATV racers approved, and the RedBud crew is hoping the national riders will agree.

“It’s the best quad track set up we’ve ever run here at RedBud,” said Ritchie. “There’s no doubt in my mind that everybody – from the little 70cc quads up to the pros – is going to have a blast racing this weekend.”

Leading the charge into RedBud is ITP/Moose ATV National Motocross Championship Series points leader, Honda’s Joe Byrd. The defending ATV National champion has three first place finishes and one second place finish through the first five rounds, winning the past round in Virginia. Well within striking distance of Byrd after five of 11 rounds is Kentucky’s Jeremy Lawson (Honda). Lawson won the season opener in Alabama and has made the podium in three of the other four rounds, trailing Byrd by only 21 points (216-195).

“Byrd won here in 2005 and looks like the guy to beat,” said Ritchie. “But I’ve seen Lawson race and it’s going to be a good battle, especially when you add Dustin Wimmer who won the fourth round of the series in Georgia.”

Also keep an eye on #199, Yamaha-mounted Pat Brown.
