The ergonomics have also been improved. Many
larger riders have found the YFZ to be a bit small
and cramped feeling, but Yamaha listened to the
consumers and has taken measures to accommodate
riders of all sizes. The foot pegs have been relocated,
and the handlebars are now easily adjustable to
four different positions. The seat on the bike
has also been changed. “There was a lot
of attention given to making the bike more comfortable,”
Ballance explained. Yamaha has redesigned the
seat to make it more comfortable, and has also
added softer plastic side panels that offer more
comfort and cushion for riders when cornering
aggressively.

Yamaha has also taken into account that no matter
how well an ATV is designed and how much power
it has, there are consumers who always want more.
Keeping that in mind, Yamaha has developed a whole
line of GYTR performance products for the new
YFZ450R, including a tether kill cord that can
just be plugged in, a GYTR exhaust system, high
performance cams, and a CNC ported head.
According to Yamaha’s marketing research,
only 15% of consumers who purchase a YFZ450 actually
use the machine for racing, while the majority
of consumers use the ATV for more casual purposes
such as trail riding and dunes. This is the reason
that Yamaha chose to use 20” rear tires
instead of 18”, which are the standard in
motocross racing. “We felt that of we used
an 18” tire that we were limiting the bikes
appeal to a big percentage of riders, so we equipped
it with 20” rears that are not only suitable
for the track with their stronger sidewalls, but
also offer better ground clearance for casual
off-road riding as well,” Pat Biolsi explained.
Yamaha has also partnered with ITP Tires and is
offering 18” ITP Holeshots on beadlocked
rims as a part of their aftermarket performance
accessories.
