Although
the cabin was modernized with electricity
& cable TV, there were many items in
the cabin that preserve the history |
Being located near the Hatfield McCoy trail system
and surrounded by state parks, this is a real
hide away for those looking for a new way of enjoying
this region. The cabin is modernized with power,
cable television and fully stocked kitchen. The
interior is period décor and filled with
items that beg to have their purpose explained.
It was really like staying in a museum, which
really adds to the history of such an amazing
home. I couldn’t help but to imagine the
generations that were raised here as I sat watching
cable TV with a Kawasaki Brute Force parked just
outside, it seemed almost surreal.
The sound of the rain on the tin roof beat out
the excitement of what dawn would bring as I finally
drifted off to sleep. Charger was at the door
well before first light and we began our trek
into our blind. The rain kept falling and I could
tell this hunt could easily be a bust. Slipping
down the roadway and parking far enough away to
not spook the turkeys, we finished the hike in
on foot and soon were in a blind Charger had set
up a few days before.

The
rainfall didn't stop us from heading out
on our turkey hunting adventure with Dual
Shot Outdoors on our Kawasaki Brute Force
750 4x4 Utility ATV |
Quietly whispering about the weather and how
the birds would react passed some time as the
slow grey morning was unfolding. Rain drops on
a blind roof obviously affect me the same way
a good turkey dinner does and in no time I was
leaned back in the blind with my eyes shut. I
was really excited for the chance to just spend
some time down here as the rain seemed to pick
up then relent and I just knew my luck was running
out.
Charger had his video equipment set up and his turkey
calls at the ready as I rested my eyes thinking
how cool this all was even if a bird never gave
us a shot. The gobbles that rang out directly behind
us brought my eyes wide open as a tug on my shirt
had a smiling Charger motioning that there were
3 coming in behind us. A few clucks and purrs on
a call had a thundering response from the turkeys
now only 15 yards directly behind the blind. With
the heavy rain, we had expected the birds from the
front and now we were watching them through small
cracks in the netting as they cautiously circled
the blind and decoy. A few more clucks and the birds
were sending a very loud message that they were
interested, now we just needed them in a location
that allowed a shot.
Years of experience had Charger getting his camera
gear in action, working a call and keeping tabs
on me who was doing nothing but waiting for his
command to take one of the three. While Charger
was on the birds with the video, I saw a big grey
squirrel scurry up a tree right next to the decoy
and immediately the birds became very alert and
started moving away. Their heads could just be seen
as they now circled in front of us but offered no
shot.
