Florida (1/19/2008) - The Florida
Trail Riders organization has been around since
the early 1970’s and was first developed to
promote responsible riding among off-road enthusiasts.
Since the club’s inception, it has grown to
almost 3000 members and in the last three years
has also dedicated itself to promoting a quad only
cross country series.
The series travels to locations all over Florida
and consists of GNCC type cross-country tracks
that average 8-10 miles in length. “We run
10 rounds each year,” stated Randy Faul,
who is in his sixth season as club president.
“We started having quad only races about
3 years ago. It’s been pretty successful
and we have seen attendance average around 200-250
riders,” said Randy. The tracks of the FTR
series are pretty sandy, especially the tracks
in the southern portion of the state, and are
mainly high-speed, but they can get whooped out
and rough, which is sure to give even the most
seasoned rider a challenge when it comes to endurance.

Florida Trail
Riders offers 27 different classes in
their Quad Scramble Series, which has
a classification for nearly every type
of ATV or rider skill level and age, and
they classes are split up into 7 different
races to separate the different ATVs and
skill level of the racers to provide for
a more enjoyable experience. Also, the
tracks provide a great mixture of obstacles
from jumps, mud holes, to creek crossings,
which makes for a challenge race &
fun race course.

“When we first started the series, it was
a bike series and the trails were really narrow
single line trails so when we added quads, we
had to go out there and widen the trails and make
rules,” said Faul. “Chairman of the
Board, Mike Preslar, was the one that made up
the proposal and wrote all the rules and basically
got everything together for the quad series.”

The series offers classes for all skill levels from
mini quad classes for kids to an “AA”
class for more expert level racers. “We are
an all amateur series, but we do have some national
pros that race here,” Randy said. Racers such
as Women’s class racer and Florida native,
Jennifer Albright frequent the series in the winter
months. “This series is basically how I got
my start in racing,” said Jennifer. “I
started racing the Women’s class about 5 years
ago. My husband was racing so after watching him
and sat out the first 4 races, then I decided to
jump in and start racing myself. I won my first
championship in my first year of racing, and went
on to dominate the Women’s class and win my
second championship. From there I decided to step
up and started racing in the Men’s B class,
but with the GNCC, I didn’t get to race all
the races, but I usually finished in the top 5,”
Jennifer said enthusiastically.

Class at the QuadScrambles, but in the GNCC
Series, she is ranked 4th among the fastest
women's racers in the country |
This year Jennifer has moved up to the Men’s
A class and all though it has been a challenge
for her, she still emphasizes how much she has
enjoyed the FTR series. “This series has
a lot of great people and no matter what class
you race in, it’s really a family oriented
series. There’s always a lot of competition
but everyone is still friends when the race is
over,” she concluded. Jennifer’s drive
and positive attitude has also landed her a sponsorship
with Geico for the upcoming 2008 season. “I
couldn’t be any happier,” she said
excitedly. “I have some great sponsors for
this year and I’m really looking forward
to it,” she concluded.
