DASA Racing's Dan Lamey ATV Engine Building History

Dan Lamey: History of DASA Racing / Team Racer's Edge

Dan Lamey flow test heads after porting & valve jobs to verify there isn't any valve leakage and the cylinder head has reached the expected CFM / Flow
Even as busy as Dan Lamey and DASA Racing is, all of the research and testing is still done manually at their shop. Everything is verified through the flow bench to monitor the amount of air going through the cylinder head. Dan said “After we get done porting the cylinder head, we go over to the valve machine and re-cut different valve angels and radiuses to enhance the cylinder flow and ensure proper valve seating so we don’t have any leaking across the valve." Another secret to how Lamey gets more HP has to do with the carburetor’s venturi. “The stock venturi itself is very small, you can not get enough airflow through there or bore it big enough, so we make a custom billet venturi that we put on the carburetors and when we do that we bore out the inner part of the carburetor also to allow more air to go through it.” Dan affirmed.

All though DASA is renowned for their top quality race engines, they also offer other products that are meant for everyday riders as well. They offer exhaust systems for the Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki 450’s as well as engine work for casual riders. “We do a lot of recreational porting and milder camshafts for people who basically want to run everyday and use pump gas.” Stated Lamey. “All the steps for building and engine are basically the same whether you have a recreational motor, full on race engine or just a powerful engine for drag racing. The steps are basically all the same, it’s just the components that are a little different.”

DASA Racing isn't limited to just ATVs, they also build motorcycle & UTV engines, and they have a Dyno to for horsepower, torque, and jetting
In addition to the exhaust systems and engine work, DASA also produces horsepower inducing air filter adapters and 500-550cc billet cylinders. They use a billet cylinder head, which according to Dan, is a lot stronger. “We put a steel sleeve into it instead of the plating. That way if there is a little bit of an issue it’s easier to turn it around and just give it a light hone and put a new piston in.” Dan said.

With the vast amount of knowledge and dedication Lamey possesses, Dan still remains humble regarding the success of DASA. “It’s not just me doing it here, I have a great group of guys that help us and are very professional. They’re the ones that actually help make it happen and make me look good.” Dan says with a chuckle. With Dan’s great attitude, dedication and unending knowledge about engines, it’s no wonder DASA Racing has had so much success and growth in the past few years, and their success does not show any signs of slowing anytime soon.

When Dan isn't wrenching, he can normally be found track side at the Nationals or locally waiting for the gate to drop to see if one of his engines will grab yet another Holeshot

Dan Lamey also has an impressive collection of 1970 Honda ATC 90's, which were the very first 3 wheelers, and they still have the original ballon tires. This blue Honda 90 is one of many colors in Dan's collection
