Brooksville, FL - While there are
many places to ride ATV’s in Florida, the
Croom Motorcycle Area is the only state property
that is dedicated to the needs of off-road motorcycle
and ATV riders; and we must say that it is a very
nice riding area.
The Croom trail riding
area sits on 2,600 acres in the Withlacoochee
State Forest, which is approximately 40 miles
north of Tampa, and was the site of the Buttgenbach
phosphate mine back in the early 1900’s.
The mine eventually shut down and the property
was left pretty much undisturbed for quite some
time. It wasn’t until 1973 that the Florida
Trail Riders and the Department of Agriculture
got together and established the Croom Motorcycle
Area.

Croom
Trail riding area consists of 2,600 acers
of sandy trials in the Withlacoochee State
Forest which was the site of the Buttgenbach
phosphate mine during the 1900's |
There are miles and miles of trails for ATV’s
that range in difficulty, from easy to challenging.
The terrain is mostly of a sandy consistency,
but there are a couple of areas that include a
little clay. The area is mostly wooded and there
are plenty of tight scrub areas, hardwood hammocks
and pit areas left over from the mining operations.
The trails are overlaid with roots and vines and
can be rough in areas, but that doesn’t
take away from the experience.

|
Croom
riding area has many wide open sandy areas
& tight wooded sections which cater
to beginner, novice, & even some pro
GNCC racers who train at Croom in the winter
months in preparation for the upcoming race
season |
There are bowls in several of the sandy areas
that provide plenty of opportunity for those wanting
to have a little fun. Although the area is mostly
wooded trails, those who have a need for speed
should be plenty happy to find that there are
several open areas that are ideal for drag racing.

The
trails at Croom are well marked with trail
signs making the area easy to navigate |
