2010 Brimstone
SxS / ATV Round Up & King of the Mountain
Report
::Continued::
The "King of the Mountain" race scheduled
for Sunday would highlight the day as things got
underway. The prize money was the goal as the
ATV race kicked off and GNCC 4x4 Limited rider
Scott Kilby would be out front as he put his skills
to the test on this very challenging course. In
fact, Kilby was making it look too easy as he
and Denny Carson pulled away from the other racers.
Kilby quickly mounted a 3 minute lead and had
officials soon looking for a problem as claims
they had to be cheating to be that far ahead.
There was no cheating, just the difference between
the two entries that race and those that don't!

Can-Am's Scott
Kilby was running in a very solid first
place position until a run-in with another
machine out on the trail would cause his
left rear tire to become punctured &
would ultimately cause him to drop back
to second place behind Denny Carson
|
With laps to go, bad luck would strike Kilby
at one of the big off cambered hill climbs. Kilby
stated after the race that he turned a corner,
fully committed to the hill when he saw a flipped
ATV in the way. He couldn't let off the throttle
and as he passed the downed machine he took quick
notice of the metal snorkel jutting into the course.
Unable to make more room, Kilby's left rear tire
would take the hit and for the remaining laps
he would fight with the tire going flat. Carson
had caught a huge break and was no closing in
on the slowing Kilby, and finally, with only several
hundred yards left in the race would bang bars
with the big Can Am and take the lead and race
to the King of the Mountain victory!

UTV's would
run next on the "King of the Mountain"
race trails & they too would encounter
their fair share of problems while racing
- a pit crew would be an essential part
to winning a race here on the rough &
tumble circuit
|
The King of the Mountain SxS race would follow,
and the challenges would really take their toll
right from the first lap! The rules stated that
no help would be allowed to the teamed participants
but that rule would soon be negated as SxS after
SxS soon found itself hopelessly stuck on a few
of the man made obstacles.
|
Denny Carson would take home the win in
the ATV devision by defeating Kilby who
encountered some mechanical failure out
on the trail |
The three hour race would send several racers
back to the pits as their day ended while others
soldiered on. A good pit set up is a must especially
when a tire is in need of replacement and there
indeed were several tires that got completely
trashed! The course itself ran five miles through
some very nasty terrain but the man made rock
gardens and telephone poles took their toll on
equipment.
For this being the second annual running of this
event, I would have to say success has been reached
and many staff members stated they were ahead
of the numbers from the previous year which is
huge in this economy, more proof that their hard
work to give people a solid weekend of entertainment
is working.
The Brimstone facility holds several events throughout
the year and more information can be found by
visiting their website www.brimstonerecreation.com
