As the summer turns to fall and eventually winter,
many of us have no real choice other then to park
our summer time fun and prepare for the cold months
that are sure to follow. The reality is that many
ATV’s, UTV’s, Motorcycles and boats
will be stored and forgotten until spring. Unfortunately,
the dormant months wreak havoc upon your equipments
battery as sulfation will begin to occur once the
battery falls below a certain state of charge. Today’s
batteries are a lot better in design and construction
of yesteryear , however they still need a helping
hand if you intend on using your recreational vehicle
without making an expensive purchase of a new battery
come spring.
For years, trickle chargers that fed a small
amount of current at a constant rate were the
battery company’s best friends. The small
batteries found in all types of ATV’s and
Motorcycles would be charged dry and damaged if
left unchecked. When spring time rolled around,
a new unit would be needed but thankfully, the
technology has made it to a point where for most
it is a thing of the past and annual replacement
is not needed if a few steps are followed.

"Smart Chargers"
|
Maintenance chargers have been on the market
for years now, and “Smart chargers”
are the future for those of us wanting the most
from our charger and the most life from our batteries.
These “Smart” chargers use technology
that map the current state of charge and apply
a very low amperage charge at a varying rate in
order to keep the state of charge above the level
of sulfation and prevents damage to the battery.
Once a full state of charge has been reached,
the charger will go into stand-by and pick back
up once the level of charge falls below a level
that requires charging once more. These new units
are simple to use and are all but fool proof.
All that’s required is a standard household
outlet to provide power to the unit and for the
owner to hook the charger to the battery, leaving
the charger to do the rest.
By keeping the current at a low level, there
is no damage to the battery and virtually no chance
of cooking the battery like the trickle chargers
of yesteryear were famous for doing. In reality,
the old trickle chargers did their job, it was
the person charged with removing it that actually
failed the process! Set it and forget it comes
to mind when using the new crop of chargers and
there should be no cause for anyone storing a
machine not to incorporate one of these chargers
into their annual winterizing routine.
