Drew Simmons started the race at the
UTV World Championship |
With hot and dusty conditions on the 16-mile
track, Drew Simmons started the race. Toughing
his way through a food poisoning, Simmons
made it up to third before handing the bike
over the Erin Simmons. Simmons ran an additional
two laps before Sloan took over. Sloan ran
out of gas two miles from the finish, pushed
the Duncan Honda for a mile and then ran into
the pits to refuel. He recovered to finish
fourth.
With the finish, Erin Simmons retains the
points the lead in the BITD title chase. He
ran a consistent pace to keep the bike in
third.

Racing's Erin Simmons took over after
his brother for several laps with the
team running in 3rd place |
“We were running third when I got on the
bike and maintained that third place,” said
Erin Simmons. “I ran a smooth race. The track
was a lot rougher and dustier than I had anticipated,
but it was still a fun race. I was glad we
were able to get the finish to stay in the
points.”
Drew Simmons was up the entire night before
the race with stomach issues. Despite feeling
ill, he started the race and raced through
the dust to hold third.
“The start was good until the dust hit,”
said Drew Simmons. “There was no visibility
for the first couple of laps. I tried to stay
up with first and second, but I just couldn’t
see. So I tried to run a steady pace and stay
in contention. I thought the track was great.
The whoops in the proving ground area were
pretty gnarly, but other than that it was
a lot of fun. The Honda worked really well.
We had no problems.”
Sloan made his BITD debut here. Despite little
experience, and the need to walk two miles
to refuel the bike on the final lap, Sloan
was upbeat and will race with the Simmons
for the balance of the BITD season.

Racing's Mike Sloan finished out the
race, but unfortunately, he ran out
of gas & had to push the Honda to
the pits for fuel |
“The course was fast and it was fun doing
something other than WORCS,” said Sloan. “The
event was super cool. I felt right at home
on the bike. I did have to get used the twist
throttle, but it was a pretty easy adjustment.
I’m looking forward to running the rest of
the season with Duncan Racing.”
The Simmons and Sloan will return to BITD
competition August 16-19 for the Vegas to
Reno. The trio will be looking for victory
in America’s longest off-road race.
