Guthrie Jr started in the back of the field on the first of the two-day event and charged to second in class. On day two, he overcame a belt issue, as well as racing officials closing part of the course to score the podium finish. Guthrie Jr was pleased to see that teething problems with his new machine are behind him.

“The Polaris RZR was great,” said Guthrie Jr. “It’s pretty cool to see what these cars can do in desert racing. Out of 300 racers, we came out 49th overall. So we’re definitely up there in the pack now. We had a few tough races at the beginning of the season with the new car. We needed a good race like this, and it’s pretty cool to get it in Vegas to Reno. We definitely have the momentum going headed to Parker. We’ll have the car dialed in for that.”

On day two, race officials closed the course between pits one and two and had competitors trailer their rigs between each pit. Guthrie Jr’s team quickly worked out the strategy and had him back on course quickly.

“That threw a wrench in everyone’s program,” explained Guthrie Jr. “You had to go from pit one to pit two on the trailer and then be ready to race. It definitely changed our strategy.”

Guthrie Jr runs Mystik’s full line of lubricants in his SXS, as well as his chase trucks and motorhome. With temperatures well into the 100s, Mystik’s full line of lubricants helped Guthrie Jr keep his cool.

“It’s really quality stuff,” said Guthrie Jr. “With the hot weather, it’s nice to know that our lubrication needs are covered. Plus we run it in all of our chase trucks and motorhomes. They really have a product to cover all of our needs. The temperature was well over 100 degrees, which definitely took its toll, but we never worried about our oil.”

Guthrie Jr will return to BITD competition for another two-day event, the Bluewater Desert Challenge, October 6-9 in Parker, AZ.
