I got that dang swinger bolt out after about 5 hrs of pounding...heating..squarting (of oil) but it came out!

http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa283/braaup/Rebuild007.jpg

Here are the tools I used:

http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa283/braaup/Rebuild009.jpg

http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa283/braaup/Rebuild010.jpg
That "Aero Kariol" (I prolly misspelled it) but it is the best ever! Better than that PBlaster. I love this stuff.. it helps take the a rusty a-arm bolt off 1min after I squart it on!

http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa283/braaup/Rebuild011.jpg
That tortch helps a ton too!

http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa283/braaup/Rebuild012.jpg
And so does this Mini BFH haha

http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa283/braaup/Rebuild013.jpg

I got the wiring harness off and ect. then started on the shocks.

http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa283/braaup/Rebuild020.jpg
Doesn't it look awesome!?

http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa283/braaup/Rebuild021.jpg
Here is how I organize my bolts and stuff. Get like an old Hot Wheels holder from Wally World or somewhere.. it works great, just when you go to pick it up, the bolts slid down then you have to find where they go.. PAIN IN THE BUTT! That is why there is a rag shuved in there..

http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa283/braaup/Rebuild024.jpg
I needed 2 of these for all my bolts

your going to need to put the axle in a vice.

the reason the hub wouldn't come off is becuase you have to take the brake caliper off first. The brake rotor is bolted on the hub so theres no way its going anywhere with the caliper on there. Good luck.

Looks good, very organized. Glad to see the pivot bolt come out. Get the motor all cleaned up nice and your ready to rock.

Whats colors you plan on going with?

Brauap
10-19-2008, 07:28 AM
Haha wow DMC.. I remember when you did that for me.. a long while ago! But I am going to get the same red as the bike the the "The Winter Project" thread that is going on almost a year now.. by honda runner.. but that color red with brand new red (99-04) plastics from Honda..

coryatver: I have to clamp the caliper to the brake so it wouldn't spin while I was tighting the wheel puller.. But I think I mesed up my piston in the brake... That front end was a pain! I hadn't ever messed with the front end.. from now on, everything 6 months or so I am going to go and grease everything down.. like the spindles, piviot bolt, bearings, shock bearings.. ect ect

speedyquad: I will be looking forward to it!!! ;)

Honda#4 I am going to take my engine to a shop to get it worked on (I just want it done professionaly and not let my back yard mechanics work on it) and we is going to sand blast is and repaint it with engine paint.. thats what he did with my YZ head.. it will look better/cleaner than it did brand new!! I am going to get new piston rings, valve check up/tune up, and a new clutch.. I am thinking about $250.. sound right?

Honda#4
10-19-2008, 07:49 AM
I dont know bout the price cuz it varies from shop to shop. Motor should look good being black.

nnaww.. I am just going to keep it silver

hornetgod13
10-19-2008, 09:03 AM
In the pictures it looked like you were trying to remove the hubs with the brake calipers still installed. That might have been where you went wrong.

If you got the swingarm bolt out than disassembling the axle should be no problem.

Pipeless416
10-19-2008, 09:39 AM
yep, leaving the caliper on will cause some problems :p

I already said before, I was just using the caliper to hold the rotor still so when I was using the cresent and the mallet, it would keep turning (the rotor)..

And I have my whole rear end in a vise right now, after I grab a bite to eat, I am going to go back out and start tearing it apart...

Wow,its really going down!Ive been seeing your posts about this for a LONG time,Looks like your moving a long nicely.Good luck man, keep the updates coming.:D

Brauap
10-19-2008, 12:10 PM
As a side note... the caliper wasn't bolted on, it was just put there then I got a zip try and put that on the brake lever and the frame to keep it from spinning...

---Update---

I got the rear hubs off, but I can't get the darn bolts off that are next to the carrier... what are some methods to get that off.. I have been using 2 mapp gas tortches to heat it up, sprays oil on, and have a big cresent on there and slamming it with that 4lb Mini BFH.. HOW DO I GET IT OFF?

Pipeless416
10-19-2008, 12:15 PM
the 4 pinch bolts in the back? once i had to pound... i think an 11 mm 12 point wrench onto the outside of one of those bolts. once i did that, it gripped well enough that i could just use that.

Brauap
10-19-2008, 12:20 PM
noo.. like the lock nut (its on the axle itself)

mooseracerX
10-19-2008, 12:39 PM
Last winter when we took mine apart we had a bunch of sand and rust up in the axle nut my dad heated it up with a regular torch about 5 times until it was red and he still had a hard time getting it off. So heat it up until it is close to red and then squirt that Aero Kroil stuff and let it sit for a while.

10-19-2008, 12:54 PM
my rebuild date is probally next year or the year after. When I got my 2004 in january 2007 it only had about 15 hours on it. Everyone wanted to trade me cause it looked like it was right off the showroom yet it was a 2004. My clutch is still in great shape its like new. My motor I beat on all the time but last compression test it was 110PSI so i'm still in spec. I noticed my 1 a-arm has play. My front wheels are bent up. If the cylinder is still in good shape and isnt egg shaped I probally wont bother boring it out to a 406 but i'll do 10:1 wiseco, stg 1 hotcam, new wheels, tires, bearings. I'm a bit afraid to tear mine apart because of that darn swinger bolt getting stuck and then if I break something lol. What are you plans for the whole build and does anyone know how often the crank bearing should be replaced?

leasureryan
10-19-2008, 04:11 PM
don't forget that the axle nut is left hand thread....this may be the cause for it not moving.

Since you have the quad stripped down, maybe you should think about powder coating. You would not regret it. It will make the quad look great and it also goes over all the scratches that already exist.

yeah i would do it now rather than have to take it all a part again at a later date. My brother wishes he would have done it while his was a part but now he doesnt feel like taking it a part again.

if braup is tight on money then he should jus leave it stock color. remeber pretty quads dont win races. put that money toward suspension or something that will help the performance of the quad.
very organized tear down braup, well done!

Thank you, powermadd! However I am powdercoating it..

Can someone run threw some color schemes? I love the one I posted at the bottom of this post.. but how much does laker custom plastic cost!? Looks badd ares tho!!

I was thinking of the same red as honda runner's frame with stock honda plastic... but I may want to change my mind..

also todays summery:

--Day 3--

I got everthing apart today.. its all in peices.. and we went to take the motor to the shop today be he wasn't there.. :(

Once I get my money from Lou... (read my I'm SOL thread) I will beable to make some progress...

Well, nothing had happend today! And nothing is going to happen for a while. I am thinking of 99-04 yellow plastic, with fire red frame, chrome top a-arm, fire red bottom a-arm, and possibly poslish up the rear swing arm (to look like chrome) then clear coat it..

What do you guys think?

mooseracerX
10-21-2008, 03:49 PM
That sounds cool. Only think is I'd think you'd have hard time polishing the swing-arm.

noo.. I mean like just just mothers' or something make it all shiney..? I don't know about "chrome" but shiney aluminum! haha would clean coat stick to that kind of surface? Also, with my a-arms how do you get the ball joints off of it??

PC the swingarm, less work, less up-keep. There even is a "chrome" color PC if you want it to be shiney.

I might of missed it but what color plastics are you going with? That silver and red is nice together.
I am keeping stock red plastic and thinking about a pearl white fram with my cndy red a-arms and swingarm and a candy blue sub-frame, or a Artic white"bluish tint" frame and the red accents.
But its got to wait for now. It's riding season here in AZ!!!:D

Almost forgot, what type of a-arms do you have? Stock ball joints are not removable.

Can't remember the name of the red but its a translucent red over metallic silver with chrome uppers.

That looks good.

I polished up a set of rear wheels that had been painted black, i had to grind the paint off and then polish i wasnt that hard and didnt take that long, they were not like a mirror or anything but the looked good. Go for it Brauap, i used a mothers ball.

Hell no clear coat wont stick to a polished surface. There has to be scratches for the clear coat to bite to.

10-22-2008, 07:56 PM
lucky, i wanna rebuild my quad so bad but im turnin 16 in a few months and im gonna need a car

BTW, make sure you take your time putting it back together, last year my dad and I had his sled rebuilt (after i blew it up :o ) and we forget to connect a sensor on the bottom of the motor so we put it back together and it wouldnt run so we practically had to take it all apart again, not fun at all

Sorry I havn't posted in such a long time! I finally got payed today so I should be making more/faster progress!

questions:

1) How to you get the rear sprocket hub off the axle? I have been polishing the axle and want to get the hub polished too, but I can't figure out how to get the darn thing off! In my Clymers', it doesn't tell me anything about the hub at all!

2) In the rear bearing carrier, between your bearings, there sits a metal circle that like takes up space (its supposed to be there) but is there supposed to be play in there? Like up and down? Because it looks like (when you take it out) it has been spinning and spinnging and wore the top of it down some. Do I need to buy a new carrier?

:macho I LOVE MONEY! :macho

Honda#4
11-06-2008, 04:20 PM
The sprocket hub has to be pressed off, as for the spacer I dont remember off hand if there was suppose to be play in there or not.

My name is Dallas if you wanna know.

Thanks, but where is it where you like get to customize like Akrix graphics? I remember doing it about a year ago, but I can't remember! Like you, you got yours customized.

When I did mine all I did was click down screens that have the colors and pick what I wanted then you add weather or not you want the proof, I reccomend that cuz then you'll know what your graphics will look like to see if you wanna change anything, then if you like the proof they'll go ahead and make the graphics.

Anyways thats what I did for mine sorry if its confusing.

Well, did some polishing yesterday.. well its like today.. its 1 AM lol..

I got the tie rods looking like chrome, as with the axle, motor mounts, and my rear caliper. I should get some pictures later today, lol, or tomarrow.. how ever you want to say it.. but on Sunday.

I also should be (FINALLY) taking my engine to the shop later today! I am so excited! Also, I have a deal hooked up on a set of 04 450R shocks.. it's slowly comming together! Once I get the frame sandblasted, painted, and the engine in it, it should be going much, MUCH faster. Sorry I am making such slow process.. its hard working around the parents work schedule..

Preload- How hard the springs are. If you're a heavier guy you adjust the preload higher to hold the weight better, and not sink as much.

Rebound- How fast the shocks returns back up from its travel. Like after it compresses, rebound is the action of coming back up. You adjust how fast it does.

Compression- How fast the shock goes down. The opposite of rebound.

I THINK thats how it works

The bottom one is most likely compression if the top is rebound.

mooseracerX
11-26-2008, 04:33 PM
Bottom is rebound and top is compression.

Brauap
11-26-2008, 05:01 PM
For XC I'd want them pretty soft right? Would I want my shocks to move fast or slow? (This is kind of confusing..)

mooseracerX
11-27-2008, 08:28 AM
Well you'll wanna set your ride height using preload spring. Then put the rebound and compression in the middle and ride it a bit and adjust it from there.
Here's an informative site.

Serious question guys....

But first here is the whole story..

So, today my cousin called (thought I was still looking for a dirt bike) and said he found a YZ450F right around me for $1200 because he is moving to FL tomarrow.. but I said that I was now rebuilding my quad and he said, Ok then, I'm going to go take it then, haha..

But then we got in to talking and he brought up that his buddy has an 05 450R for sale (I have ALWAYS wanted one!) but then he goes into more details like...

It has Hiper Wheels
LSR Axacailber +2 Axle
(I forget) +2 A-arms
Full HMF Exhaust
Graphic kit
and PEP shocks!!

Then he brought up the price.. he wants 2800.. WHOA!

Now to my question.............

Should I rebuild my 400, (screw the clarke tank, itp bajas, ect.. )just make it run and look nice, sell it, and buy the 450!? If I take my time polishing everything.. I bet I could get 3G for it, and I could stil have some $$ left over if I don't spend it all for the rebuild... what are your guy's NON-biest opinions?

DO IT.

You will not get 3g's for the 400ex. Maybe if you clean it real well and polish a lot of things, you MAY be able to get 2200..

But its still worth the extra 600. I would take a 450 if I had the chance.

But ask yourself this.. that 450r is obviously set up for mx. Just narrow it up and you have a nice xc bike.

Ruby Soho
11-27-2008, 08:59 AM
few things

you won't get 3000 for it. why, someone could easily find the 450 you want and buy that for 200 less.

how do you know the 450 will still be for sale by the time you get the 400ex put back together and running better than perfect?

you've said numerous times you ride long trails. got the 400ex 2x4 for a "challenge".. but you want enormous tires for hard trails. a 450 like that will be more than a challenge to take through tough trails. its hard enough riding them in trails when they're set up for motocross.

Brauap
11-27-2008, 09:05 AM
Also if you look at it

back in 1999-04 GNCC not alot of pros (at all) used a 400EX, most use 250R's,Cannadales,Banshees, ect then once the 450R came out, WHAM! All the prose (Honda sponsored) is riding them!

Plus they look 10x nicer too!

Yea, DMC also, If I don't like those +2, I could sell them and maybe get 500+ ... dunno..

and around here ok/nice 400's are going 2.2-3.? G.. depends.. If I can't sell it for 3 I will drop it to 2.8 then 2.6.. then 2.5.. ect ect..

he meant that honda has NO factory support. If you race honda, your on your own. Its almost like honda wants no part in it.

On the other hand, yamaha takes good care of their racers.

Time for some updates, don't you say?

Well, I got everything all painted today and it looks great! The frame, sub frame, head sheild, bumper, a-arms, throttle housing, rear hubs, foot pegs, rear brake lever, and some more. I will post pictures tomarrow once I get home from school.. I have them all taken, but there uploading and won't be done for a long time..

I am going to wait til Friday night to touch the parts again to make sure everything is 100% dry. Right now, they all are sitting in my room, behind me, on a peice of carboard w/ my room full of fumes.. I think I may just be high.. :bandit: hah

So next weekend I will be dropping the bottom end in and be building er' up! I still need to order some parts (sprockets, new lug nuts, wiring harness, and possibly a seat cover and plastics. I say possibly because I have a guy wanting to trade me his 450R for mine and he wants it ASAP and may not want to wait for the plastics.. oh well.. but you guys may not be able to see the finshed thing.. sorry if it turns out that way!) If you have a wiring harness for sale let me know via PM! I would take it right off your hands! (99-04)

So thats all for now! Sorry I took so long for this.. I have had it sandblasted for a while now, but didn't think it was enough for an update.

Well, I g2g2 bed now.. later

Oh yea, the a-arms are in the garage still, thats why they arn't in that last pictures.

The color of the a-arms and (sub)frame is soo beautiful! Its just not silver.. its a little darker than the 99-04 silver frames.. but it have silver flake in there and w/ clear coat. WOW! :eek2: Thanks again to my uncle. He use to do it for a living and had the extra paint. There wasn't enough (he gave us 3 cans, different silvers) so we mixxed them and it was beautiful! The pictures really don't do it the justice it deserves!

Also, like the chrome paint on the swinger/axle/oil rezzy? About 3 bucks and in person, it CAN be mistaken as chrome too!

Veryyyyyy difficult. You have to get behind every little clip, gasket, hole, creves, everything! PAIN IN THE BUTT! You have alot of work ahead of you if you plan on painting yours.. we only did 2 coats of everything with that gun.. if you plan on using a can.. whoa. I had my dad do most of the painting (I did a little with the rattle can... I let him do it because he knew what he was doing.. and he has done it before (all his custom dune buggies and that.. and he said that was the hardest thing he has painted.. much harder than those buggies (full size))

Thanks guys for the responses!

I forgot to ask how did you end up prepping it? Problem I have is trying to find an area to hang the bugger, with being in school I thought I'd have more time on my hands for little things but I cant even manage to go to the hardware place to match up some wheel studs so I can put my front tires on, I miss my quad life!.

Brauap
01-12-2009, 07:45 PM
I sandblasted it then I used an epoxy primer then painted it (NOTE: IF YOU LET IT SIT FOR MORE THAN AN HOUR AFTER PRIMER YOU HAVE TO GET A BROWN SCOTCH BRIGHT PAG AND RUFF EVERYTHING UP. YOU HAVE TO CLEAR COAT WITHIN 1 HOUR OF PAINTING ALSO.)

Oh and ways of hanging.. to hang the little stuff, we used a later with pipes and we hung the little stuff like that (could of hung the big stuff, but we just used out table.. we only used that for drying) and before that we used an only swing set frame. (Swing set w/o the swings)

Tell you the truth, after you finish, PC seems soo cheap! If you PC it, it will be done faster, better, and last longer.. If I had to do it again, I'd gladly pay 150ish for the frame and sub. But this was a good experience tho.

01-12-2009, 08:09 PM
I dont really have the money for PC, plus PC wont match my paint, I really dont know if I could get my quad tore down without everything else getting in the way. Sure feels like it is getting close for me to start thinking of selling it but I just dont have the heart to, lucky I have a snowmobile to sell before the quad gets it but i'm holding out on the quad for as long as I can.

Good news & Bad news...

Good news! I started putting it back together! Got about half of the front end done, before the torpedo heater ran out of karosene.. :( and it got realll cold realll fast! I went out side and I used that heat sensor thing-a-ma-bob and it read... -59! YEA.. :scary:

Bad news! We went to go clear coat the chrome stuff today and it.. well.. didn't turn out soo well. The oil rezzy and the bottom of the swinger is now a dull grey. I was sooo up set! I had some werid chemical reaction to it. I am also re-painting the frame about 20 good times to make sure it lasts.

More kinda bad news.. kinda good is that dad doesn't trust me to build the engine on my own.. which really PO'd me.. but they offered to pay for it then.. so I guess I am OK with it. Not sure yet....

Also one of my things on the side of the a-arms the pushes in and seats next to the bushings.. I am missing one.. what is the name of that so I can order another?

Well.. thats all the good stuff thats going on.. later.

Not to make you worry about something else Colten but when you go too put gas in make sure you pay extra attention so you dont spill any, let me tell you it's a royal pain cuz the gas makes the paint turn into a sticky paste and the only way to get it off is to blast it lucky for me it just hit my heatshield and that was it but getting it on a frame could be a nightmare.

Just a tip for ya.

Sounds like your making good progress?

Didn't think about that! Well, I can tell ya'll.. that this is the last time I paint something that big again.. I am just going to get it powdercoated, most deffently. I had painted my heat shild about a year before this, and it was just paint.. and it held up with about 1-2 gallons of gas on it over that time period, no chipping, no paste-like substance.. I can amagine the clear coat doing that, however.

I'm going to agree with you Pipeless. Brauap do you have any new pics, I'm interested to see how your rebuild is going. I started one this winter. When I started disassemby, I realized my camera was dead. Thus, no rebuild pics. I will be posting the afters though. I am almost finished I did black on black. Black fame with Maier black plastics. AC black nerfs and bumper. Also I put a 416 kit, stage 2 cam, and a new exhaust, etc. All it had before was a K&N and a jet kit so I am excited to take it out for it's maiden voyage,. Too bad its 15 degrees and snowing in Michigan, I can't wait til summer.

No pictures yet.. really havn't done all that much.. I got the wiring hanress on today..:ermm: I am also cleaning EVERYTHING verrry good with a tub of a mix of chemicals/cleaners and a tooth brush.. I even cleaned every crack of the air box.. under the lid, filter, in all the corners, in the air boot, ect. When someone comes to see this, I want to make them want to try to find some dirt on it.. :p

I may also trade it for another 450R (my dad's buddy has one (set up mildly for XC)) He doesn't know much about quads.. so he is basically looking for a good clean, good running quad. It is at a lot (in doors) of a car lot.. and all he does is trade.. so if I get mine looking 10x nicer than that (the 450 was deffently riddin hard) we may just swap titles and keys! But this may fall through like the other one, therefore I am not getting my hopes up at all.. I have to keep telling myself there are many 450R out there and in there area that just need to be found. Like I found this one because my dad is looking for a F-350 at the lot (of his buddies) and I by chance saw the tip of the front headlight through the glare of the glass.. and it turned out to be a pretty nice 04-05.. that's how I got my new nickname: Hawk Eye. :p

1st off i have a 250r not a 400ex..and im sure if i put it in the qotm i could beg all of my 250r friends to vote for me.it was obvious that this was the case.im not saying you have a piece of *****,its nice but wasnt on the same level as the other quads.they dont discuss changing rules for no reason.everyone knew it was rigged.and dmc-400ex, ive never seen a 15 yr old as smart as you.please do us a favor and shut ur mouth.we have enough riders in these forums that know what there talking about,we dont need a little "know it all" kid telling us what we need to do..oh and no this isnt foxhondarider

Actually I haven't really been in any fights for a while now.

I have a great respect for people when they come to this conclusion and admit it.

Fox was banned for good reason.

The dumb rebuild can wait! hah

And yea, we may have a snow day tomarrow.. where supposed to get an ice storm, then a snow storm.. we may get it, and thats what my bus diver told me (and shes a good friend) and usually when she says it, there will be one. But if there is a snow day, I will get about 10 hours in, your right.

oh btw.. people (trx250rider, brian76708, and storms400ex) stop ruining this, if you continue doing so, I promis I will report each and everyone of you.. 1 time for every post you make that isn't on topic or is rude. I mean sure, you can go off topic, but when you bash other people, I will not tollerate it for I have been bashed many many times.

Word. Did anyone happen to catch his thread while it was up? He was banned for it, dropping F-bombs and posting pictures of the middle finger. Kinda funny to see someone purpously get banned.

i was just pointing out the obvious and i think this was my first time ever posting in this thread cuz i try to keep my mouth shut on your threads due to all the issues you seem to attract. was it really necessary to single me out there are much worse words by other people on this thread which are directed at you. know im ready to see pictures of your build and no more of this argument which is the reason i barley go on this forum any more because it gets so annoying. hope u get a snowday so i can see some progress.

Kinda update!

As I was re assembling the rear end, I got FED UP with the chrome paint because rattle can or spay can, the clear coat doesn't work on it therefor it chips and scratches easly.. but thats not all... it you even SLIGHTLY touch it at all, it smudges and dulls, so I am going to re-sandblast my swing-arm, axle, and oil tank and I am going to have them all professionally chromed. Bad thing is that I am going to have to buy all brand new bearings for the rear again, but I am fine with that. (When I go to remove them, they'll get damaged.)

Hey man don't know if you got them out yet but If you want to get them out w/o damaging them you can use a 18mm socket and it fits in there and you can pound them out w/o the being ruined.

Moose, are you talking about the axle bearings? Also, guys, I can't remember, but is the axle supposed to be like rammed with a malled for it to go in all the way, or is it supposed to like just slide in 100%?

btw.. Its not going back to stock stock (it will have an aftermarket black seat cover, razr rear tires, Carisle Badland front tires, and AC racing nerf bars)
