Pictures.. didn't do a whole lot today... I ran out of wood for the wood burner and it got kinda chilly.. then I plowed our drive way.. I really only got about 5-8 hours in today.. :( Once I get my engine back, everything will move a whole lot after too (I can't put a whole lot of stuff on until I get the engine in :ermm: )

All done with the pictures.. soon I will have the brake lines re-bled, and put on and I should be getting the engine back soon. Still need the plastics and I made a deal with my parents.. they'll buy them for me now (so I have enough money to finish the build) and I will pay them back over time.. thats what we did with my YZ125 cyclinder and it worked out great and I payed them back every penny.)

You could probably get away with just scuffing it with a pad and spraying it with high temp spray paint...Just do it gloss black and it will look brand new!

get a wire brush and clean out all those corners and such filled with dirt (i.e the steering stem clamp, spindles etc..) then spray wd-40 or something in there and wipe it down. it will come out really clean

Will do! I started back out today, but I just got really PO'ed because water was finding its way in somehow and it was all over where I was working (no where else) and my socks where soaking wet! Then to make me loose it, I was trying to fill the holes with silicone (I found where it was leaking in) and then I got about 1in of silicone stuck to my hand, both hands, and I couldn't get it off. I still have some on.. I had to wait till it dried and peel it off. I couldn't touch ANYTHING for like 30 minutes.. AH. I was pissed. But I am all good now! :)
Don't you hate it when your having one of those days where your not feeling the greatest, and you start getting PO'ed at every small thing that happens then it starts building up and BAM! Maybe thats just me.. I think I may need to go to somekinda anger-management.. :p

Braup.. what you need to do on all those black plastic parts is take some of that foam tire dressing. Spray in on all the black plastics, and wipe it down. They will look nice and shiney and next time you go riding, the mud doesnt stick to it as much. Easier to clean.
Thats just a little detailer tip.
Nice lookin ride.

Im taking off my swingarm bolt and have a few questions.
Whats the swingarm made of? Is the torch safe on it? What should I avoid with the torch?
We used an impact wrench on ours and hammered it but it didnt do anything. The friend is bringing other types of hammers and pins to try and smack it out.

It is aluminum and it is OK with a tortch. Just make sure you don't keep the flame right on the chain guide.. what I did was I seated up both ends of the bolt, then I heated the WHOLE path way of the bolt and where I couldn't see it, I put headed up the swinger.. then I used some Aoil Coil (I think thats what it is called, if you look like on the 1st or second page, it has a picture.. it's the orange can.. its by far my FAVORITE lube) everywhere where it was hot while I was turning it (use a ratchet or one of those air one.. keep spinning it..) and since the whole thing is so hot, its more opened, and it makes it easier for the lube fit it the tighter of places.. if you got it hot enough, it will steam when you put it on.. then repeat that a couble of times.. then I got a big screw drive (make sure the end will fit though the whole if it will keep going) and keep wacking it.. over and over.. if it dosn't move in about 30 or so GOOD whacks heat it up again and use the lube again.. it takes a good long time BUT DON'T GIVE UP!! Sorry, I know it is kinda hard to follow..

I have been cleaning alot of parts.. I re-done the swing arm and oil rezzy gloss black w/ clear.. and I put the choke back in my carb and put the stock jets back in... I also took my carb to the wire wheel and it made it look like it was polished! Looks real nice! To bad you can't see it when everything is back together! I just couldn't get into some of the tight places.. tomarrow I hope to get most of the rear end put back together.. again and get the oil rezzy hooked up.
I also should be getting my engine back any day too!
I am wondering what I should do for my axle..
Should I paint it a nice gray/silver color and clear coat it?
Should I spend a ton to get it plated in chrome?
or should I get it sandblasted with soft sand then just clear coat that? Because it will look nice.. like aluminum.. I am thinking about doing this. It will be the cheapest way aswell.
I will get some pictures tomarrow.

I would, but I only have 200 bucks left. :( I already made a deal with my parents being if they pay for the plastics now so I can finish my bike, I PROMIS to pay them back. Thats what we did when I have to get work done to my YZ125's top end.. it worked good.. just took a while to pay her off.
I need:
Plastics*
Seat Cover*
Lug Nuts*
Battery**
Lights*
Tail Light*
money & time
If anyone has anything up there that's for sale.. please tell me.
If you want to sell me something I have listed up there.. please look at this "key" I have
* (I need and want from someone but have to be in VERYYY good cond.)
** (I need, but I am not going to buy it via on line.)

Sorry. I am not going to be buying that online. I am just going to run down to AutoZone and pick up a new one.
Well, no pictures to night. Sorry guys. But I have out in the garage for 12 hours but probally got about 11 hours of cleaning/reassembling time in. I got all the paint off my axle, then I took one of those brown scotch-bright pads to it.. then I clear coated it and it turned out reallll nice! Looks like its aluminum! I got most of the rear end put together.. and got the entire front end on encluded the tires. Tomarrow I hope to get all 4 on the ground.
Thanks for following up on my build!

Wow. Sorry guys it has been soo long since I have updated this! Since last, I.....
Painted the oil rezzy black
Painted the swing arm black
'Polished' many many more bolts and peices
Got my engine back from JP Cycle
Got the quad itself on the ground
Got the front tires on
Waiting on the sprockets to come so I can bolt on the rear tires
Got my rear brakes bled. (I am waiting for a part to bleed the front)
Got the engine installed
Got my battery hooked up, thus finishing the wiring harness (except for the tail light, and head light I need to buy)
cleaned a ton of parts
oiled my air filter and got it all back
got my gas tank on
and thats about it..............
The reason I havn't gotton alot done was because I was waiting to go pick up my engine.. Right now, I am ready to put the plastics on but I don't have them yet. I also need the money. So.. I am going to wait about 2 more weeks so my parents don't get annoied with my quad.. again.. and I will head off to the Honda dealership and get them ordered. My parents are going to pay for them up front, and over this summer, I am going to pay them back.
Parts and stuff I need to do:
Bleed front brakes
get plastics
get seat cover
get front and tail light
get the fluids (oil, gas, ect.)
Install the sprockets/chain when they arrive
Clean a TON more
Start
Break-In
AND SELL!
I am going to post pictures in the following threads.. ;)

If your going to get new plastics why go with OEM, if your gonna spend the money why not pick up some lakers or fullbore or maier. Then you got more color choices and they look better.
Brauap
03-09-2009, 01:52 PM
hypersnyper6947, because clean/stock sells better than aftermarket. Plus for the whole plastic set from our dealer ship it is going to be right around 300, where full bore and lakers are 500-650ish and maier.. I just dislike. PLUS I am going with red plastic.. why buy a more expensive aftermarket of the same color and style (maier) when I could get a cheaper set and it is more durable. (Maier plastic is thinner than OEM)

GUYS I REALLY NEED YOUR HELP!!!!
OK, so I got my sprockets and chain today in the mail.. GREAT! So I installed the sprockets and I went to go put on the chain (which is already cut to the right length! COOL!) but the carrier was out too far.. so I went to go move it up to give the chain more slack.. and it WON'T BUDGE! So I took OUT all the pinch bolts and tried.. NO LUCK! So I sprayed WD-40 all up in there.. to try to loosen it up.. NO LUCK! So I got a screw driver inbeween the bottom and top, prying to open it up about 1/4 in. more and it still WON'T BUDGE! I tried with the tires off and it just lifted up off the jack.. so I put them on and I have my chest on the subframe my arm through the middle, and me pulling up AS HARD AS I CAN!! I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO! PLEASE HELP!
It's kinda sad that I have gotton this whole thing together and this little thing is holding me up! URGH!!
Maybe your out of adjustment? The chain may have been cut so that even on the loosest setting it's too tight.
If not did you try some PB Blaster?
Pipeless416
03-09-2009, 09:08 PM
did you try turning it the other way? the front bolt that holds the caliper on the brake stay WILL hit the swingarm if its turned too far one way.
Brauap
03-10-2009, 05:59 AM
Yea, I tried the other way.. then it moves fown about 1/2 inch, makes a click.. and then it doesn't move! And I was even standing on the little allen rench trying to get it to move! haha
I sure hope I don't have to take the whole rear end bac apart!!!!
What would PB Blaster do that WD-40 won't? And would PB Blaster hurt the paint?

No, the carrier is set at its 'tightest' setting.. the top notch on the carrier is about 1/2 below the notch on the swingarm. :ermm:

maybe there is paint in between the carrier and swingarm or that the carrier was scratched.

Alright guys.. well I tore the back end back apart and put it back together just how I put it together before, and it works now.. soo.. yea.
Also, I took out all the bolts on each side of the engine (one at a time) and I 'polished' each one.. it looks pretty nice.
I will get pictures to you guys tomarrow alright?
Now, all the parts I need are:
Neutral Light
Tail Light
Head Light
Seat Cover
Plastics
and after that some gas and oil and its up and running! Oh, I also need to buy an oil filter.. and I need to touch up some paint that had gotten sratched while putting it back together.
get plastics
get seat cover
get lights
get the fluids (oil, gas, ect.)
get oil filter
Clean a TON more
Start
Break-In
AND SELL!

I forgot to tell you guys..
When I went to go pick up my engine, I was talking to my mecanic and he said the reason it was smoking was because my oil ring colapsed.. and that makes since with how I was riding it when my airbox came off.. and how hot the bike got..
Well, I'm going to get to bed.. talk to ya'll tomarrow.. after school..
Dude... with how much money you sank in this thing and how much you still plan to sell, you could have just put all that towards a 450 and parted out what you did have for money. So honestly, unless you plan on keeping it, why in the world would you put all this money, time, and effort into it?
From the start you shouldve parted the f'er out. lol.

Before I started.. the ONLY o.k. thing on it was the engine, which needed work done.. trust me, if I where to part it out, I would have gotten MAYBE 1G for it all together..
And I have only put about 1400 into it..

thats why when you parted it out, you clean the parts before you sell them.. you didn't buy tons of parts here, mostly cleaned them...
not such a good move on selling it IMO
but whatever, its your quad good luck loosing time and money on it.

I am SELLING it. I only want positive comments in this thread from this point out, if they continue, I will close this thread.

Last i checked 900 profit for the effort and EXPERIENCE of actually doing it himself is still not bad...mind you i have seen alot of quads going for next to nothing everywhere in the country, but give the guy and A for effort...maybe he will get more and make us all feel foolish....

UPDATE! (Nothing much has happend.. just more cleaning)
I had gotten NEW RED plastics from our dealer and some other small parts and the rebuild is almost complete! My dad took my seat to our buddies' house today to get that done (plain black seat cover) and I had just ordered a tail light therefore I am basically finished!!!!! I just need to go to the dealer tonight and pick up some small stuff like push pins, oil, head light bulb, ect..
I have a few pictures but they are on a card my mom has, so I'll get those uploaded once she gets home!
I'M SOO EXCITED!!!
And again, guys (and gals) sorry I havn't really been updating you guys.. I just hadn't really been doing ANYTHING latly.. just waiting for stuff to come in and for money to grow on my tree :p
With the pictures I had said that I would post (last months post :blah: ) I tried but I couldn't find that picture!! I will keep looking but.. ya

To sell it. I know I don't, and I am sure others feel the same way, but I don't trust peoples work when they sell their moddified ANYTHING! I'd rather buy something stock, knowing it is in good shape and it will be reliable, and not falling apart because of somebody's "afro-engineering and backyard mechanics." I had the engine professionally rebuilt (with recipts) and others to ensure this quad will last.

Colton,
I have watched this rebuild from the start, all winter, in a cold garage and i have to give you props where props are due.....I know it was a long process but i tell ya that quad looks as good,if not better than when my 08 came off the floor. The best thing is about this whole rebuild is that you did the majority of the work yourself, didn't scrimp or cob anything together. And on top of that...who ever gets this quad will know that a guy that redid this knows the quad inside and out and can tell any potential buyer every nut and bolt on that thing....Congrats on a job well done....hate to see ya get something other than a Honda...but we know you will pop in and out of the forums now and again...Great Job and don't let ANYONE tell ya different.

Ok...
Good News: It runs as good as it looks! It pulls very hard and sounds great! :D
Kinda Bad News: The rear hub nuts where so loose I took them off with my hand; there is a clicking in the rear end, I think I just have to tighten the pinch bolt (it isn't tight); and I found a bolt from my quad in the parking lot, therefore I now have to search it all over tomarrow to find where it belongs! :ermm:
Bad News: The base gasket and head gasket are leaking oil, therefore I have to take it back to my mechanic to get it fixed.
Super Bad News: Because of the "Bad News" there isn't a chance to get a bike before the 4th of July weekend to go riding with my family! The second family riding event I am going to miss out on, THIS YEAR! :grr:
At least this is happening to me, not the guy I sell this to! :ermm:

Honestly Colton,
I guess if you have your heart set on a yz250, then go for it. But that 400ex, is beautiful now. SO much better from when you bought it. I think if you kept it, maintained it, and threw a decent exhaust on it, you would have yourself a great looking, great running, reliable 400ex.
But if you really want a bike, I wouldn't tell you no because that's what you want more.

atv tires are definitely not manufactured perfectly.. a quick check to make sure its not the hubs or axle would be to take off the wheels and then see if theres a wobble. both of my tires do this, on both axles i've had. sometimes thats just the way the bead seats. do that quick test, and if the axle and hubs are fine, don't worry about anything.

06-23-2009, 08:15 PM
Pull a wheel while on the stand, put a micrometer on the axle close to the hub, fire it up and see how many thousandths the axle's off (if it is the axle). Looks like the axle or hub to me.

also, after replacing three carriers and one axle this weekend...we mic'd the old axles and were off by .01, while the carrier bearing were not bad. The axle was actually wore wear the bearings ride. That cause a lot of play in the axle. That was the most extreme case of the three, but they all were off after 5-9 years of use. That could be your wobble problem.
JUST A THOUGHT.

Well, there isn't in Canfield that I know of that are Pros, except Point View and Canfield Motorsports, but I take my engines down to Lisbon to JP Cycle! He is such a great guy! His son had made a mistake on my engine (hince the leaky gasket) but they said "Bring it it and let us look at it!" for not cost they are going to fix any problems caused by them.. so their work comes with a garentee and he also does ALOT of work for ALOT of GNCC racers.. he is a super nice guy! I will not ever go anywhere but there from now on! And his prices and equal with others in the whole area.. to tell you the truth.. if you go in his shop, there are boxed from Andew's.. Canfield Honda.. Point View.. ect because they couldn't do the work themselves so they sent it to JP, but they get the credit and charge you more! JP also does small powdercoating, shock rebuilds.. really anything
Here is his site: JPCycleonline.com
I HIGHLY RECEMEND HIM!!!!! X100

racerdan24
07-04-2009, 02:57 PM
Colton,
As bad as the economy is...rule of thumb....Start the price higher than what you want so that way if someone comes in and offers you 250 less than what you want, you can say yes and get exactly what you want for it. Ex:
asking 3000....you want 2750....someone comes in and offers you 2750...you get exactly what you wanted. You need to add some wiggle room into the price.

First, they tell me that I but the wrong spark plug in it and it was hitting the piston and if I would have left it, it would have blew a hole in it, but in reality, they told me the first time I went to get the engine that they put a new spark plug in it.. but they also charged me $40 because they had to adjust the carb to get it running so they could see where the leak was comming from (the quad was running FINE, fore I rode it into the back of the truck 45 minutes before they got their hands on it.. but I paid it and ignored the anger inside of me. About 20 minutes ago I unloaded it into the garage and started it up.. it was running fine but kept cutting out, and it is still puffing smoke from the exhaust-burning oil! Then I just sat down to cool down and I was staring at the engine when I saw oil burnt exhaust funes rolling out around the headers- they didn't even tighten down the 4 bolts for the head- they where hand tight! I was FURIOUS! Then I started to look more at the engine, and the F-ING GASKET IS LEAKING AGAIN!! I am DONE with JP Cycle and I will only go back there so THEY can fix their god damn problem they can't f-ing fix! GOD DAMNIT!

Sorry to hear about the problem not being fixed. Hopefully you can get this squared away and sell it. Make sure that when you sell it that it is running with no problems or the next owner will be coming back to you as you did to JP. Good Luck.

I know, I'm not going to sell it until it is 100%, as my ad on Craiglist states.

Looked at your craigs list ad. Maybe you should not mention how much you paid for the atv. If I was interested in buying it, I would say to myself why am I going to pay more for this atv than he originally did. All the aftermarket parts and rebuild really dont contribute to the price, maybe just a little. As you know, when most people sell there atv they put it back to stock and sell the aftermarket stuff seperatley, because they know if they leave the aftermarket stuff on the atv that they will not recup the money they have invested. Good luck!

Braup, I hope you understand what I mean. Its just a suggestion to help you sell the atv. I know the rebuild was unavoidable to enable you to sell the machine since it blew up.

Well, after spending many many hours out in the garage, I got it running perfectly! It pulls very hard and.. ugh I am so happy! And to top this day off, I had gotten an e-mail from a guy and he wants to trade me a nice 2001 HONDA CR250! Only downside is he is in Lexington Ky, but he offered to drive the 6 hours here! But I'll meet him somewhere half way.. I'm thinking Columbus..
But back to the quad.. I think the problem was that the bearings wern't tapped in all the way.. I took EVERYTHING apart and put it back together and it runs perfect! Oh and guys, remember the problem I had where I couldn't adjust the chain? Found out what caused that! I put too long of bolts for the skid plate it, and it threaded itself through the swingarm and into the carrier, therefore stopping it, but I didn't know that until I bashed the carrier for 2 hours trying to get it out (the carrier is fine)
Today is a gooood day! :)

the 01 cr250 were the most powerful ''year'' ,if the bike is in excellent shape id do the trade, a 01 cr250 would pull about 1800-2000 in my area so i would tell the guy to drive to ure house

Brauap, one thing you have to learn about craigslist. There is many dreamers. Never get your hopes up or get stuck on something.
Someone will come along eventually, you just have to be patient.:)
