i just got a 1999 honda 400ex... i was wondering what oil to put in it for the winter....winters are cold here

should i put SAE 10w- 40 or SAE 10w - 30?

10w40. but people on here say that you can use the cheap car oil in the summer, but in the winter, get the oil specified for atv's.

Dont ever use car oil, it has Moley i it. It will ruin your clutch. Use atv or motorcycle oil.

yea, car oil is cheap. but no good.

but atv oil is like 4 bucks a quart for the cheepest

HUGE debate here and on other ATV/ATC forums! I run/ran Valvoline 10w40 in the summer and Valvoline 10w30 in winter in everything in my signature. No problems ever. The important thing is routine oil changes. As far as the argument "it's a wet clutch", the oil is there to lubricate everything and let it do it's job. "Energy conserving" and that junk is just that, junk. Run what ever brand you want. For winter 10w30 or for very cold maybe 5w30.
