We had planned on buying suspention next week oros, but this was a STEAL on this bike so we jumped on it last night..
this will allow her to run in a few more classes and yet stay with riders closer to her own age and riding abilities. I wont get into too much detail until the suspention arrives and things start to take shape.
Pappy, Sis would like you to PC all the goodies if thats OK :) She is dead set on a bright green I guess. :p
wow looks sweet. Shes gonna love it.

should be a great power to weight ratio.. are there engine mounting kits that can be baught for hybrids like this or does everything need to be fabricated??

I agree! She is very light weight right now and it shouldbe a great upgrade for her.
I think most of this has got to be fabricated. If there is anything out there to help aid the project, Ill be all over it .:scary:
I guess this makes it a YaHonda Eh?:huh :p
There is a couple members that have offered to help give some tips on the build so Ill be in touch with them soon. :)
i would call it yolonda :p
looks like it will be a great build
make sure and get LOTS of pics:D

Are you planning on eventually putting the original (but upgraded) motor back in?
is she gonna move up a class even thoe she doesnt have to to help advance her riding. or do you guys follow like a serious.

I doubt it , we will probably sell it and she would be better off buying a crate motor (like a 250F) I have been told the Blasterrs are a nightmare to deal with once they are bored over and Troy has his hands full enough with the minis :o :p

We are done racing locally, this will allow her to run a 90cc shifter class, sport class(12-15) and any other class with 90cc and under in it and yet, still remain competitive with other kids her own age.She hasnt rode a shifter long enough to run in an adult class and I dont want to set herself up for dissapointment, especially with alot more traveling.
I am REALLY hoping WORCS series will have a shifter class in 2007. That will be a GREAT class for her cause the kids that run in it are good, fast riders.I feel shifters should have there own class if there is enough demand .
I am soooo glad too cause her and her brother running same class has caused ALOTof stress in this house!! lol
so yes, she is moving up...;)

Theres no reason for us to drive all the way to Cali to run ONE race at GH. We want to run a FULL series so WORCS will be as many as wa can attand w/o effecting the kids at school and our pocketbooks to stretch far enough .. Also Wash. racing (tri-city are mainly) for some local MX...we will travel and a little in Utah as well.Maybe a couple FT races at some point .Who knows..
Cali. is just too far to run a full series.

hey QJ if i were you i would deiffinetly get that motor port polish and get that head shaved while the motor is out of the frame. It will be money WELL spent. Dirt bike motors react well especially to getting the head shaved. It makes it more rider friendly. Although you will have to run race fuel:o. It gives it awesome snap and as long as the clutch is not engaged there is power every where. NO bogging.

QJ thats a good lil motor... i had a 1996 CR80 (same motor) and man that thing ripped!!! don't worry lil QJ it'll fly for ya!
mine had boysen carbon fiber reeds, Pro circuit pipe, ported, wiseco piston, and a few other lil goodies from pro action.... make sure you get the carb polished... the carb mod made the biggest difference on my bike... the thing flew... i never lost a holeshot with the bike...

10-02-2006, 09:42 AM
Theres gonna be ALOT to learn on yet another motor :scary: We just want to keep it reliable
So the CR80 and 85 are the same motor? I didnt know that ,but then again.. I dont know much about the mini dirt bike motors either. lol

In the last couple years I believe the manufacturers bumped up the cc's because the ama rules have always been 85cc limit. It is basically the same motor. In all reality 5cc makes little to no difference in power. QJ that should be on cool little machine. It will most likely be ALL top-end power though. The minis are very pipey. She'll have to be pretty good with the clutch, but from her recent track record of finishes I'm sure she'll adapt fine. ;) Good luck to ya'll.
Tommy 17
10-02-2006, 10:01 AM
i'm 99.9999999 % sure its the same motor... see the cr80 was actually 83cc... but one company called theirs and 85 just to make it look faster when really they are 83 ccs... i'm pretty sure theres no differnce in a 1996 to 2006 cr80 except one year they changed the gas tank and shroud design... besides that they are the same...
QJ i beat my 80 from 1996 to 2000 pretty bad and it never broke down once... not a single problem in 4 years on a built motor!

I know off the line they dont seem as"peppy" as hers does -at least from the ones Ive seen but they have a gobb more top end.Hers climbed hills better as well, but Im sure with experienced people in the field, we will get the right clutch and gearing .The 1st year will be more of a practice for her than really competitive I think. But then again....She might surprise us! :D
Brandon has already taken over her quad and was Def. ready for that motor. We had him take out her mini this wk end to get used to the difference in fit and feel to the local dunes.... Not much jumping out there but I managed to get this one with Dad... He will have two quads now for two classes. This makes it alot more versatile for BOTH kids .http://i.pbase.com/o5/26/660826/1/67861643.VLRg4o35.IMG_0582.JPG

I ran a fmf sst to fmf shorty, vforce reeds, twin air airfilter and a little port and polish on my cr80 and the thing was fast as heck! the vforce reeds really helped with the lowend bog the power deilvery alot smoother then what it was with the stock reed cage..
Very good motor's I ran the piss out of mine and never had any troubles

I think making the pipe fit right is going to be one of the bigger projects we will have out of the whole thing.Maybe swingarm too..If I can grab some info thats out there on this type of project, Ill be all over it.

Were stumped on who can modify the swingarm w/o it costing an arm and leg. Also, never done the Motor mounts before so that will be a new one. We was hoping the pro circuit pipe would wrap around w/o TOO MUCH trouble.
Ill keep that in mind ;)

I would like to thank Bradley for taking the time to help me line up stuff for the build and then not end up doing it . lol
This quad was a total steal in price so we just had to get it .
Now I need to decide whether or not to keep the other CR bike or sell,it would be a good way to have a back up motor, maybe PEP it up a little bit down the road and sell the rolling chassis.
We will be making some small cosmetic changes, the bumper will be 1st to go. :p Im thinking like a Rath or IMS(Black)
Kelsey still doesnt care for the color as much as the green, but we are going to "compromise" and go with some Cobaly Blue accent so if its still ok Pappy, we would still like to send some stuff to you !

The CR will put the smack down on a stock Blaster
The CR is around 21-22 HP out of the box. This one has a Custom built pipe,a good one from what Ive been told. Then she has her power to weight..
Running a CR motor will allow her to run the sport and 12-15 class with other kids .Shes not ready to run a full adult WORCS Course. When shes done and moves on to a full size ,then my Son can race it. We just about have enough quads to keep every one content racing for a bit now !:scary:

Quads here... FULL TEAR DOWN will be needed ....:(
FULL TEAR DOWN being done this wk end...
Owner short cutted alot of things and diidnt do proper upkeep on it.
I should have known this would happen.
Rear shock is blown, but what do you expect when a 250lb man hops on this kids quad right?? sigh...
.
We saw many addintional pictures, ask many questions so we knew what we was getting(or thought) but I guess thats the risk you take when buying off the net .Like I said overall though,it was still a savings over starting from scratch.
I dont think there will be too much cost, Im just a little angry about its condition. It was still worth the price and saved us time, I just dont like being lied to.This is also my kids race money that will have to be used that we was saving up for WORCS series that they have been so excited to run in 2007. Hope the previous owner is VERY happy with his fat check
Ill have a parts list posted when were done wat all we done to it,its also getting PC'd a dif. color.
I guess Sis will get here green frame afterall...

Oh its great looking, just need some work . Theres no way my kids racing it in the shape its in now.
Still not sure, the owner didnt know either  He had it built for his kid,he didnt do it himself.
Its def a longer swinger, reminds me of a Banshee swinger. Its just a guessing game at this point.

its definitely not a 400ex swinger, its no link. But alot of companies did design swingers to use Honda setups for the chain adjustment.
BTW it looks like the lock nut on the axle isn't on right :o I'm sure thats one more thing to add to the list

Now next will be modifying the pipe to fit around it . We have someone locally that can do that.
Next will be fabbing a skid plate.

Troy and a close freind have been hard at work fabricating this week.. The Hybrid now has an upgrade to a YFZ Radiator and had to changed the angle of the pipe...
LOL so much for the nice Powedercoating..!!
Hopefully next week the PC will be getting done.
colors will be
Stealth Black
somekind of Red
Flourescent Green
I ordered the Spastic Graphics to match today.
heres a couple shots of the Radiator our friend took.
I cant thank him enough for all his help :)

We are converting to a 400ex clutch cable I think he said, most everything will be Honda, I think the only thing not is the Radiator and the Chassis.. LOL
Still not sure on a few parts that are on there, were trying to research some of the parts to know what to buy for replacements.
It shoudl be ready to strip down soon once we got everything fitted,or at least most of them.

That's the only bad thing about custom built quads! Some people seem to skimp on the most important parts! I'd even look into a Maier plastic skidplate if you are looking to save weight. I run one on the R and it works/functions flawlessly. Definitely a lot lighter than an aluminum one as well.
That line is ridiculous. I don't know how it hasn't leaked or even just ripped in half.
Quad is definitely looking good though! Can't wait to see progress pictures.

Oh , its BEYOND what they described, and now seeing what I do ,I can see they only shot pics certain ways so we wouldnt see all the flaws!:grr: Troy called and let him know he felt he owed us a refund for needed replacemen parts that was BEYOND damage... He STILL hasnt returned our call. The owner is NEVER there, apparently has his shop guys do all his dirty work, I for one think the guy was there the whole time, he just didint want to talk to us.
I just hope the guy is at the opening Round of the series (if we can actually affford to go now)
We called Elka today, hopefully we will get the specs on the shock of the serial number and what exactly that shock is(we think its a ZPS) we might not need to change the line on the Rez once its been serviced. Not sure yet, we might fix the fronts ourself and just send off the rear.
BUT... If anyone posts asking about this dealer, Ill be the 1st to tell them what happened to us.I just hope this all doesnt cost my kids the sereis they have been looking forward to racing ,then it will all be a waste.
QuadJunkies
11-15-2006, 12:14 PM
Well, looks like the shocks we can do ourself,we add thenew line and ciompletly service them ourself-THANK GOODNESS!
The line will need replaced, its been kinked up too long and wont straighten out. That will save a few bucks.
We found a Chassis skid that will most likely work(thank you Daddio!) we want to make sure its covered good this time.
hopefully Ill have some pics to post by next week of some of the progress and a little less complaining :p

This has been a slow process, but were getting there!!
Motor was sent to her new sponsor at Fuel Technoligies (http://fueltechusa.com/)
he build motors for Ricky Carmichael at one time .
the CR85 motor is getting new ceramic bearings, rod ,piston , porting ect....
The motor will be built to withstand more weight and have exceptional Low end power.
powder coating will be this wk end(FINALLY!) Ive had a REAAALLY tough time finding the right green, its all ready to shoot.I hope its the right color.
So far just about everyone but ourselves have delivered what we was promised. The graphics was a dif color, the shocks we are having to bebuild ourself, what should have been NEW shocks we later found out from Elka from the serial number is that they are 3 YEARS OLD you cant buy replament parts and will have to upgrade if they wont hold after the servicing(they had a leaking issue and have new seals,we will most likely just replace them)We was told they was valved for a 90 lb rider, when in fact they were for a 150 LB RIDER .
Troy has literally went threw it from top to bottom and redone everything. It now has gussetts, it now has a radiator and belly skid plate (thank you Daddio!) were acid treating the radiator next week or so. .It got a full set of new tires on its way(UPS has lost them somewhere, see what I mean! ) Clutch was shot , got a new one .Were PC'ing the Axle black, Handlebars black, bright red/Orange for the swinger and stem and hubs. Its got new bearings,we are literally doing all the work ourselves.
The good thing out of all this is that we will now know what all has been done to it and it will be a much safer and reliable quad for my girl
I just hope now we are over the hump and can start to have fun with the project and enjoy this little pissed off mini when its done
heres the color the frame will be
Physco Lime

that frame is going to be SICK! i can't wait!
there r "lemon" laws that protect ppl from this sort of thing happening. here is what i would do. check the site and se if he strill has the bike listed. if he does, print everything out, so u have all that is advertised. then take him to court, showing what the bike really was like and what he advertised it as. he will and up paying no doubt. he will prolly pay up if u just threaten him because he knows u will win if it goes to court. this is what i would do. i got stiffed witha bike once, and i couldn't take the guy to court because i was too young and my dad is too conservative to do it, so i ended up losing a chit load of money. this kind f thing sucks. take him to court.

Tires came today-WHEW!:D
we debated what tire to use and felt the radials would be a VERY good tire for her application for both MX and WORCS racing.
rears are the 18 inch.
Also, Spocket Specialist is making Custom spockets and are also being hard anodizing to make it strong as steel.
Chain will be from SideWinder.
BTW... Anyone ran the Temp stickers from Factor Effects? WEre also giving them a try.
New new Brake lever, silencer packing and tie rod ends came as well, pipe was gutted and sounded AWEFUL.
Also, motor was in bad shap ,had the wrong size head on it and felt weak, glad we had the motor workedover before the 1st race of the season of chaces are -it would have seized.

Troy and our good freind of E-ATV-racing have been hard at work getting the l;ast bit of touch ups done before finsihing up all the powdercoating. The black textured parts will be done today

I actually had to convince her of the red, she wanted just the green and black, but she was later convinced mixing a few colors will enhance others(hopefully!) especially when we get new graphics down the road, she will have a little more color to work with :)
Id like the Gorforitgraphics, but I dont think they make them for the Maier Blaster plastic :(

That looks so awesome. I never realized that a 85cc engine would be an improvement over a 200cc yfs engine. My brothers gf is gettin tired of her blaster. Mainly how it handles(stock suspension is horrible) we always wanted to put a crf or yzf 250 engine in it but thought it would be too much power for a lil blaster. Seeing these photos gives me alot of ideas. If she doesnt like the 300ex i built ill talk to my bro about putting a cr85 engine in it and coverting the back to a honda rear end. We already converted the front brakes/hubs/spindles to 06 blaster(her blaster is a 96) so its all hydrolic already. and just so you know alot of the 300ex 400ex 250r 450r parts interchange with each other. 300ex and 400ex/450r axles/wheel hubs/sprocket hubs and brake hubs interchange. 300exs and 400exs share the same rear brake calipers. And also share carriers for the axles. I believe that 400ex axles are one to two inches wider than 300ex axles stock for stock. Aftermarket antifade axle locknuts are the same for all the honda quads. the 300ex i built has an all 400ex front end on it and it handles so much better than stock. I cant wait to see more photos of your project. Maybe well have to do a custom blaster buildup as well.

The ASV that came with it was junk unfortunaly, so we went with the stock 400ex( Im pretty sure that what they picked out )shes use to mine so we replaced it with that .
I was hoping it could be salvaged but no such luck :(

What was wrong with the ASV levers? If they are worn out, you can get replacement parts. You can also contact ASV, explain what you are doing, and how the levers got "trashed", (you bought the bike that way) and they might help you out. They stand behind their products very well.

Daddio,Im actually waiting to hear back from ASV on rider support (if I didnt send in resumes too late in Nov.)
I cant remember what Troy said was bad with the lever, but Ill find out ;)

Daddio, Troy said the entire thing was rusted and worn out .The levers themselves was competly unfixable (literally) from abuse, like most of the rest of the quad was

I guess Troy is making a few phone calls today, another to the owner of the shop .We found out a few more details on the quad that was false advertised.
I for one have already reported them to the BBB for fraud.
That's too bad. I found out the hard way that you are supposed to oil the spring on the ASV levers after washing or riding in the mud. But they replaced all the rusted parts for me.

By the time that rolls around, Brandon will be ready to upgrade she will prol. be racing MINE and I hope to have a NEW ONE by then,Troy may be switching to a Bike so I may be getting the 450 who knows... all I know is
its MY TURN!:grr:
I think the thought of her riding a quad that fits her well. Her weight is whats tough on a big quad right now,she may never gain another pund but trying dif. set ups and gradually working her way up is a good thing I think :)
How old is Reed now? Does he still l have his Blaster? Or did you sell it. I knew you was thinking about selling it .

That sounds like a good plan......... I was just messin' with ya.
Too many parents put their kids on the big quads waaaayyyyy to early.
Reed is 15 now, and has just started "bulking up" and can throw the YFZ around, but he is still only about 130 lbs. He was just barely a 100 lbs with all his gear on, when he started with the 450. But he was also riding the Blaster as fast as it would go, literaly.
The Blaster is oficially for sale now. $6500 as is, with all the spare parts.

Maybe Reed would be a good one for her to talk to about her racing since hes been there and same build at this age.

You are so right. Reed hasn't listened to me in years.
I think the kids get to a point in their riding, where it's hard for us (adults) to understand, because we do things that require more strength, weight or physical size to accomplish.
When the kids talk with each other, or to a Pro rider, they get a better understanding.
BTW......... Joe Byrd is putting on another school in Montana, June 2-3rd. Reed is signed up for it, and some other kids on shifters, as well as some other adults. It would be a great oppurtunity for Kelsey's racing career.

Stay home from 1 WORCS round..... :blah: ... $475 isn't that much, given the training she will recieve. Brandon might be a little too young for the class. I think they should at least be riding a shifter, unless it's a "Mini-auto" class.

HEHE.... the kids wouldnt like that at this point :p
Why the heck is he hosting it on Montana anyways?? Do they even have quad racing in Montana?
Its an added expense we dont have for the travel, the fees arent what adds up so fast as the drive, time off work, motels ect...
were tapped out
Theres hardly any racing in Idaho these days aside of FT racing ,especially for the minis so its a big thing for them to do the WORCS series so they have kids to run with .:)

Im sure we will be doing LOTS of changes on gearing ,tires possibly(alough I think these tires are SAWEET!) she is REALLY struggling with traction, might be a little tougher on a 2 stroke too maybe.
But yes, its all about some solid seat time.
If it would ever warm up abit we might be able to ride more:ermm:

Those tires look like turf tamers. Have Troy get out his fancy new grooving iron and remove every other "knob". Or you could spring for some soft compound Maxxis Razor MX tires.
