I was wondering what you guys that about the 400ex and if its worth the money. I will be doing mostly trail riding but some jumps and dunes. Thanx for any input.

You are in a 400EX specific forum so you'll probably get the same biased response from everyone. That said, the EX is an awesome machine and should perform perfectly for you.

It's a Honda  :macho Maintenance is not something you need to worry much about. Basic things only: oil change, filter cleaning, etc.
Top speed stock depends on year:
1999-2004 (15 tooth front sprocket): 67mph
2005-2006 (14 tooth front sprocket): 58mph
As for the 400EX, it's a great all-around quad. You need to do some stuff to it for racing, but for trail riding, some jumping, and some dunes, it's a great quad. No complaints.

i like mine but at times i wish i had gotten a 450r or the kawasaki(sp?) kfx 400 only cuz ofthe liquid cooled engine andadjustable suspensions but the 400 ex works great for me after a few modifications.

They are fun, but if your hoping to out run your buddys on dirtbikes your going to be disappointed. The 400ex is fun, but no where near as fast as a 250cc 2-stroke dirtbike. As long as your not trying to race them you'll have a blast. Its a well rounded quad and lasts FOREVER.

teh 05 is actualy about the same top end speed as teh previous years. they did lower the countershaft sprocket 1 tooth, but changed the internal gearing to go along with it.
the 400ex is a great trial bike, but IMHO thats about it. if you plan on racing competiitively you need to sink alot of money into one or buy a 450. but for you, sounds like the 400ex will be just right.
