Ok guys just got a call from Harlen he has been running around trying to find out what happened to all the pros. Lets just say alot of the top runners had problems in moto number 1.

Jeremiah Jones was hit hard by Joe Byrd when chasing after natalie in second not sure if it was a cheap hit or not just he hit him hard enough to knock him off his quad.

Pat Brown had a rock hit his igntion causing problems with his quad.,

Travis Spader had motor problems.

Dustin Wimmer was having issues with his coil.

Tim Farr also had motor problems think it is something with the shifting but that is not 100percent approved its what it was.

Devore, CA - The opening round of the ATVA MX Nationals provided race fans plenty to talk about with several race changing events.

Moto One
John Natalie Jr grabbed the Holeshot with Jeremiah Jones running strong in second until a few turns into the race after the uphill whoops. Jones was launched off his quad when he was hit, which caused a chain reaction involving Dustin Wimmer, Dustin Nelson, Travis Spader, and several other riders. John Natalie would go on unchallenged and would win with around a 10 second lead. Keith Little and Joe Byrd would round out the top three.

Side Notes:
Dustin Wimmer: - Coil Wire Broke and ended his race
Travis Spader – Engine Problems
Tim Farr- Kick Starter Issues
Pat Brown – Ignition issue from a rock

Moto Two
John Natalie Jr would once again grab the Holeshot and looked to have another win wrapped up as he pulled a 7 second lead with only a few laps to go, but his seat would come off, which forced him to slow down and allow both Joe Byrd and Doug Gust to make the pass. Natalie was able to maintain 3rd, which wasn’t enough for the win, which went to Joe Byrd.

Joe Byrd picked up where he left of the 2005 season with the Overall Win, and it was the first time him and Heather Byrd have ever won on the same weekend, so he was really excited about his victory. Doug Gust rode a strong race in the second moto after making plenty of adjustments to his LTR450, which included adding a set of ITP Tires from his Stock tires.

Jeremiah Jones would once again run into trouble through the whoops when he ran into rear suspension issues, which ended his race. Dustin Wimmer would also have a bad weekend after he had coil issues in the first Moto, he would end up with a flat tire in the second moto.

Keith Little looked extremely comfortable on his new Honda ride as he just missed the podium to Doug Gust, but with the series heading to Texas next weekend. I am sure he is looking for a repeat of last year when he won his first overall at the ATVA MX Nationals.

A complete report will be posted tomorrow night along with photos.

I was at the race and had to shower twice when I got home to get all the grit out of places it shouldn't be.

Was a great day of racing and yes, the Suzuki's were fast. Jones would have given Nat a run if his suspension had not failed in the second moto. Didn't notice Johns seat coming off. Just saw him look down and slow or he would have won the second moto.

Farr had all kinds of problems in the first moto and just didn't look in sync. in the second.

Little looked very comfortable on the Honda as well as Byrd.

Gust had a bad start and worked his way through the pack with some beatin and bangin in both moto's.

The track was the usual ROUGH, RUTTED with the usual carnage. You would have to be standing at the base of the Talladega turn when the Packs blow by to understand it. You can barely walk up that sucker. The ground shakes and you are looking up at them . I have some video that I may post later.

The woman's #1, #2 were having a great race neck and neck the whole moto.

If not for the wind it would have been a perfect day. But it's rare that Glen Helen has no wind this time of year.


Gonna be a great year with the new kid on the block(zuki), switching of brands by some riders, etc.

yea stock swingarms are great, but what people dont realize is that its a NEW stock swingarm every 2-3 races.

i know one of the pros that rode a yamaha last season that went through 11 stock swingarms :eek2:

yes but the 05 yfz swing arm was way stronger then the 04 know a couple xc racers that broke a 04 but had no problems with the 05 and the chain on the 06 on XCbobs.com YFZ held up fine at the 12hr

We have been racing on our stock 05 swingers for a LONG time - rough races, too - and constant abuse......no problems with them.

Perhaps, given what happened to the Zuk....they shouldn't be running their stock rears......?

Lets see if we can get this straight. Jone's WALSH linkage broke which caused his FOX rear shock to break. Is it that hard to understand? Had nothing to do with the stock components. As for you people saying he ran the stock rear shock if you look at the second picture of the LT-R that merriman posted, on the left side of the subframe you can see the reservoir for the FOX shock mounted almost against the plastic. The stock rear shock is a piggyback setup.

Sharp eye! I don't know for sure if it is a "walsh" or not but I thought they were running a "walsh" set up...? I can see the linkage in the same pic and it doesn't look like "it's" broke???(It still has the bolt with nut through it) SURELY A "WALSH" WOULD NOT BREAK! :p Can't tell if it's a stock swinger either from the pics. Must have been the lower shock mount on the "FOX SHOCK" that failed. Could have been the hard hit Jerimiah took in the 1st moto.?? But I thought he would just jump on another backup bike to make sure everthing was right in the 2nd moto. or can they not do that?

So that's a stock dog bone linkage right? Doesn't look like the "walsh I saw on ,pics or Gust's bike. Gust must have been running a full blown bike and Jone's >a "close to stock as possiable while still being competative" bike. They were probably thinking "At least one made it to the podium." but WHAT IF TWO! made it and one was on a stock swinger and axle! That would have been something to brag about. Too Bad though....

According to the latest issue of dirt wheels, both quads use a stock set up for there rear suspension including the rear shock. the only thing that is different is the pipe, some porting work, a-arms and front shocks. even from the pics i saw at glen helen, gust is running the stock rear tires. Just some food for thought.

From the AMA/ATVA rules:

nope wasn't the linkage it was the tabs off the swinger that broke take a good look at the pics of the bike after damaged the linkage is all still there but the tabs from the swinger are gone, this happend to me on a swinger my friend made.

John Natalie is running a Roll Design rear swingarm and front end.

Both Gust and Jones had stock rear ends, minus shock, and I didn't look at the linkage real close, so I am not sure.

If that is what broke then thats pretty rare that you see a walsh part break!

Either the linkage broke in half or they are running 2 different linkages because if you looka t both pictures closely you can see that the CNC'ed part is different and has a bolt through it .....it looks shorter either way the pics of the linkage on the quad on the 2 stands is different than on the race bike.

actually i was wrong after further inspection of the pics it wasthe frame tabs that broke off. the bolt that you are seeing should have been connected to the frame it is now pointing backwards to the rear...

I think you're meaning that they both had 1st and 3rd place finishes. The second moto is the deciding factor, the better finish in the second moto will do it. The second moto basically decides the winner. lol...there is no tie in racing, maybe in final points at the end of the season but that's a different story.

There is alot of rumors out there....I was standing right there when Jones passed Byrd and hit the jump/whoops.. Alot of the Media was around Jones when he pulled off but they just took pictures of the rear of the bike...Jones Mechanic ran over there and pretty much Blocked the photographers out when they lifted the Suzuk up from the rear.. Then they all went inside the Suzuk Pit and blocked every Hole they found, so that noone can see what happend... There was no pieces flying or laying around from the shock......

I believe the rear part of that linkage has another piece to it, the tab that physically mates the shock to the linkage.

That to me is what appears to have broken.

As for what Walsh part breaking, it goes to show everyone is human, and jones being superhuman at times, can prove faults in anything. What makes a good company is wether they address the problem correctly, and with both Fox, Walsh, or Suzuki I am sure the problem will be dealth with.

jones was running a fox shock,fox linkage,& stock swingarm. the tabs that connect the link to the swingarm broke, causing the shock to break, the linkage is probally the last thing to break, but look for a walsh swingarm on jones bike for texas.

from the picture it deffently broke from the frame not the swinarm. If it was from the swingarm the linkage whould be much closer to the frame. in the pictures it looks like its hanging from mid swingarm. With a darkblue/black pieces on the linkage from the rear pictures witch seems to be the frame broke. and it looks like a stock linkage?

Dana who? JK... yes I am related...

Dana bought 06 Yamaha a couple of weeks ago. He rode it for a photo shoot and then at the national - Saturday in the qualifier and Sunday in the first moto. There was some trouble with his motor and we are not certain what happened totally.

We will work on diagnosing it this week.

This year there are so many Nationals and although we would love to head out to all of them, it is just not possible for us to do at this time.

We will very much miss all of our friends that we see when we travel to these events though.

That Dogbone was originally facing foward> to the frame (blue tabs). Not the swingarm. The swingarm connects with the the H looking part of the linkage but i don't see that hanging down either. Man Team Suzuki must have been SMOKING TO COVER UP the carnage!

I still belive it was the frame tabs that broke or combanation of all being weak from the wreck in the 1st moto. Jone's must have taken a HUMONGOUS HIT! in the 1 moto to knock him off his Quad! I hope he is OK, He's good guy and down to earth... At least he was when I talked to him a over a year ago....but he was riding a YFZ at a fair race. Boy!He is "Something else!" to watch!

He is going to Kick Butt in TX!!!!
