View Full Version : dune riding
I thought that all the dune riders out there deserved a forum of there own... I only wish we had some dunes around here. Might have to make the trip to Silver Lake one of these days.

Thanks for the area Leo. I hope to gain some helpful insight before the next riding season. It hurts to just see the quad sit in the garage for 6 months. Riding starts in about 2.5 months out here. By the way, the new look is great. Keep up the fantastic job. :)
I can't wait for this season in the sand I am trying to get my bike back together after a winter and spring of upgrades. First trip will be to Pismo in Sept. then Glamis for Thanksgiving I can hardly wait, I can smell the race fuel already.
Can I get a woop-woop from the duners here! Just kidding, I am itchin to get back out there hopefully it will cool down early this year. I know a group of crazy mo-fo's that are going to Glamis this weekend. Sleep all day in the Haulers and ride at night. I just can't see that being worth putting up with the heat of the day.

Just got my Dune Hoppers so I'm ready to head to Little Sahara! I've never rode the dunes before, so I'm really excited!
Hey Razorback, are you going to the Little Sahara in Oklahoma? I've been there a few times and had a blast. I'm sure you will too. Happy Duning.

Yep. I haven't been there yet, but have heard it is great. It's about a 5 hour trip for me. A group of us are going up there in September, so I'll be sure and post it in case a bunch of EXRiders want to meet up.
Is the jumping as fun as it looks in pictures?
I used to live in Manhattan, Kansas so it was about a 5 hour trip from there as well. Well worth it to spend the weekend. Now that I've moved to North Dakota, its a little difficult to get there, but I might make it back down there again this fall. Yes, the jumping is usually pretty good provided you find the right dunes. But everytime I have been there the dunes have been great for jumping. My buddy has a web site with some pictures of our last trip there http://www-personal.ksu.edu/~pav0921/ Go to "sick quads in action" and check out "Waynoka, Oklahoma". It was a bit cold that day (it was in February) but the dunes were pretty nice for jumping. Another nice thing is that there are trails that you can ride on into town that lead to a gas station and a resteraunt. A great way to maximize your riding time. There is a "Little Sahara" web site; have you checked that out? If not I can find the address for you.

Thanks for the info. I've visited your buddy's site before - some great pics of your jumps! Yeh, I've got a link, http://www.waynoka.com/littlesahara.htm - but I don't know if that's the one you are talking about.
Yup, that's the site I was thinking about.
Just got back from riding some dunes and had a blast.
Am just kind of testing this new forum also.

Hey michro, where were you duning at? I noticed you are from Colorado, have you been to the dunes around Walden? Are they any fun? Also, is there any good desert-type riding in southern Colorado?
I just got back from South Western Wyoming around rock springs.
I have been to the dunes at Walden several times but have really gotten tired of them. They are way over used and are basically a sand area w/ some hills to climb not really any dunes left.
Have not been to anywhere in Southern CO. as I live north of Denver and mostly ride trails or tracks around here.
Later
Greg.

If you ever plan a trip to Silver Lake, let me know and I may be able to hook up with you, considering you will have to pass through Northwest Ohio to get there anyway. Dunes riding is a blast and Silver Lake is a awesome place to ride.
Little Saharah, OK is my duning domain! That place has everything, jumping, dragging, trail riding, whatever you want!
Lucky SOB's! One of these days I'll get a taste of some dune action. :)

Yeah I'm serious. Me and my friend just about got a $125 dollar ticket from a stupid @$$ ranger. He told me to push my 400 back to the North Campground. I was like OK but I hammered on it and lost him. Oh yeah, he chased me but he never found me. BTW, they were putting a sign up when we ate at Miller's and I didn't notice it. That was that morning. He told us that.:huh :grr

Hey duners, since we have a duning forum I thought this was a good place to tell you about my site. I have pics and ride reports, maps, directions, and general descriptions of dunes in Colorado, Wyoming Idaho and Utah. Please take a moment to check it out.
Here is a crappy pic of Little Sahara's dragstrip.

Was actually pleasantly surprised how few people were there. Is it always like that?? what about holiday weekends??

Man I am so jealous! I live in PA and i think the closest dunes is Silver Lake.
Unfortunately its not just around the corner for me either. is a 6 hour drive to rock springs dunes so have to make a 3-4 day trip minimum to make it worth it. But its Worth it!!!! :) :devil
The best this is when I get there its just set up camp and go ride. OR go Ride and then set up camp.
How far is it to silver lake for you. Looks like some pretty serious dunes out there.

Michro,
I've never been to Rock Springs on a Holiday Weekend. I usually hit Walden on Memorial day and Rock Springs a few times throughout the year. I don't think I ever saw more than about 20 or 25 people at one time there. The razorbacks there are really, really bad and can put a serious hurting on you if you aren't careful.
Since you live near Denver, it's a pretty easy shot out to Little Sahara, Utah. It's too hot now but spring and fall are good there. Easter gets about 30,000 people and a LOT of injuries, too. St. Anthony in Idaho is the best though.
You're right about Walden.... Boring. But it's pretty close at least.

I've never been to the dunes if and the only chance I had was when we went to arizona although wouldn't of been much fun on the blaster anyways. How big is silver lake or does anyone know of any dunes closer to iowa?

silver lake sand dunes is huge, but only about one third is legal to ride O.R.V.s on, which is about 450 acres. it might not sound like much, but its plenty.
