A
private lake for jet skiing and water skiing,
another private lake for fishing, a private
air strip, an RC car track, and a huge motocross
track are just a few of the amenities. After
seeing all that, one would think that they have
just landed at an all-inclusive ATV fantasy
resort, but the reality is, you have just arrived
at ATV racing legend, Doug Gust’s house.
Doug
Gust’s racing career has spanned two
decades and he is, without a doubt, an inspiration
and roll model among race fans both young
and old. His accomplishments have not only
helped to bring the level of competition to
new heights, but also have helped to bring
more recognition to the sport.
Despite
being one of the oldest racers out on the
track, Gust has proved season after season
that he still has what it takes to run with
the young bucks of the sport, and the 2009
season was no exception, as Gust finished
out his season in fourth place overall in
points.
"Digger"
Doug Gust was kind enough to invite ATVriders.com
out to his place to take a full tour of his
facility and hang out for some fun. We also
had the opportunity talk to Doug about his
successful 2009 season and what his plans
are for 2010.
ATVriders.com:
Doug, you went out there and had a really
good season once again for 2009. Are you pretty
happy with your performance? Doug Gust: Yeah,
I’m pretty happy. I wanted to do better,
but I’ll take a top five finish.
At
42 years old, Doug Gust was still going
strong in 2009 against ATV racers half
his age & he once again claimed
several Podium finishes along with a
4th Overall finish in the Pro ATV Class,
but unfortunately Doug will not be back
in 2010 for another season since losing
his ride with Suzuki
You
seemed to have some trouble early in the season,
but at round five, you really stepped it up
and ran the rest of the season consistently
in the top five and were on the podium four
times. What did you do to get that extra edge? Doug Gust:
I just did a few setup changes to the Suzuki
and I did some extra training and practicing
and hit the gym a little more.
While
many of the top pro ATV Motocross Racers
travel around the country practicing
at various tracks, Doug Gust does most
of his practicing at home
Was
most of your training done at your facility? Doug Gust:
Yes, mostly at my track.
