Review
of GCD (Tinner's) Air Scoops
(written by RANGER400EX)
I
decided to order the GCD air scoops after having done quite
a bit of research on pricing, availability, and design. I
talked to a couple of guys about the OMF scoops and avoided
them after having found that they mount to the fender and
were seemingly expensive. I talked to Jim Gerachi of GCD (most
of you know him on the ATVRiders website as Tinner) about
the scoops he was making. He gave me a little info on his
scoops along with some installation tips, and after a short
chat I had him send me a set. I received the scoops priority
mail three days later (along with some frame guards to test
out) and got to work putting the scoops on. There were no
instructions in the box but the install is simple and took
less than thirty minutes, or two cold ones.
The scoops mount in three different places (for strength). I first installed the clamps (Lightly), without the nut and washers for the scoops, on the front frame tubes leading up to the bumper like this.
The
second step is to bolt the zip tie for the back mount onto
the scoop. Then slip the top mount bolt through the top of
the scoop. Install the scoop onto the clamp bolt from the
previous step then slide the top bolt along with the scoop
into place in the hole above the shock mount(It is the triangle
brace with a hole in it, see picture) Align the scoop and
wrap the zip-tie around the down bar as shown in picture,
but DO NOT TIGHTEN zip tie yet leave it loose. With the scoops
aligned tighten up the frame clamp and then work back and
forth tightening the bolt on the clamp and the top mount bolt
until the are tight and check the alignment of the scoops.
If everything is in order and the top and bottom mounts are
secure, tighten the zip tie and clip the end.
Here is the top mount picture. The long bolt goes trough both of the frame braces and is secured by a lock, washer, and nut. This is a very easy install and the scoops are very secure. The scoops do not flex or flap while riding and the quality is excellent. I have ridden several races on the scoops and they have held up great. They really add something to the looks along with getting more air across the motor for cooling. I would definitely check them out if you are considering scoops.
