Rebuilding
the UTV / SxS CV Joint |
|
|
If
your stock CV joint exploded like ours (pictured
left) we suggest purchasing a CV joint rebuild
kit available from Gorilla Axles |
Now its time to overhaul the CV joint itself.
Our stock CV axle had seen its better days and
when we dismantled the joint, we found it had
burst into pieces. This would mean we had to use
a complete rebuild kit and the CV axle kit we
chose was from a tough driveline builder named
Gorilla Axle. Gorilla axle builds some of the
toughest axles in the market and everything you
may need to repair any part on the axle. Our heavy
duty kit came with a new cage, spider and oversized
bearings as well as a pack of Lucas oil moly-based
grease. The new heavy duty cage is thicker and
tougher than the stock equipment.

Before
rebuilding your CV joint make sure it is
clean and free of any metalic remains |
After cleaning out he old grease and any metallic
remains out of the CV cup, we were ready to install
the new cage and spider. Installing the new cage
and spider into the axle cup can take a few tries
so just remember to be patient as it should slip
down into place with just a little effort. The
cage and spider will go into the CV cup easiest
by holding the cage vertical and slipping the
entire part straight down into the cup housing.
Then you can rotate the cage flat to begin installing
the bearings.

Rolling the spider & race down
into the CV cup can be tricky but it will
go |
Hint: The spider inside the cage should
be installed with the tapered spline side up,
which will allow the axle to slide into the fixture.
