Chainsaw Buyers Guide: ATV / SxS Trail Maintenance Essential Tool
Chainsaw ATV / SxS Mounting Attachments

Hedgesville, WV (3/1/2012) - Whether you find yourself doing routine ATV / SxS trail maintenance or gathering firewood for yourself, a good chainsaw is a must have tool. For many, buying a saw that fits a wide range of usefulness without breaking the bank or one that fits a variety of sawing needs can be a difficult task, but if you can find a good private chainsaw retailer and avoid the big box consumer stores, you can get some hands on direction from very knowledgeable people who can help guide you in the right direction, as well as offer service and repair if and when its needed.

For the past year, we have had the pleasure of using a Stihl model MS250 on everything from brush to full size trees. Two models, the MS250 and MS180 fit what we feel would be the ideal trail saw to pack on the SxS or UTV when heading off for a day of working on the trails.

Chainsaws can come in handy for both yard work & clearing ATV / UTV trails

The MS 250 model got the nod over its slightly smaller relative based on our personal needs. Both are roughly the same size and sport the same size bar, however the slight power increase the 250 offered nudged us just enough to make it a permanent fixture in the back of our Polaris Ranger. In the past year, our saw has seen intense duty as a limbing saw while we cleared our property as well as the go to saw when our trails were blocked by falling limbs and trees. It has preformed flawlessly.

There are many chainsaw manufactures including Stihl, Husqvarna, & Homelite

A chainsaw for trail upkeep need not be so powerful that you need to grow a beard and sport flannel year round to run it. It should be light, easy to wield and pack enough punch to get most anything out of your way. Stihl and Husqvarna are the two major players when it comes to saws these days, however Homelite, Poulan and McCulloch all produce chainsaws that will work well for the average user.

Bar size ranges on the smaller consumer saws run the gamut and can be ordered with 13" to 18" although we feel a 16" bar works very well and allows cutting even a larger size tree out of the trail. Running a larger bar on a small saw just doesn't usually work well enough for us to recommend it.
