Well I raced a TC 416 EX today with my cousins KTM200EXC. I had raced the guy b4 with my 400 and he dusted me pretty good so I knew this would not be an easy race. Let me tell you about the contestants first.
1. 99 TC 416EX just about everything that can be done to the motor was done, the guy I was racing said the guy he bought it from said he 4k in the motor alone. Just to list a few things, lectron carb and he said yes it sucks, cam, pipe, lightened flywheel, valves, key, springs, etc, basically everything that can be done to the motor was done. He was running 14-40? gearing he said so he was geared real low.
BTW other than rims and tires nothing else was done to this 400, no axle or anything.

2. 00 KTM 200EXC 2 stroke 6spd Stock except a 50 tooth sprocket on the rear, stock is 48, front is 14 I belive.

Riders
Him- moderately well ridden 300EX for 4 years, I would say as good or better rider than me weighes about 180#s

Me- moderate rider I think I do ok on drags. I do usally get the holeshot on my 400 against faster vehicles. weigh 165 #s

Raced 3 times
1st time to much throtle for me stood up he was ahead the whole way, I was catching him in the end but he did win by a quad length.
2nd Race he had to much throttle I beat him by a bike length
3rd time we both got off perfect and I found the trick, since I was relatively light I could short shift, If I went through the gears like normal he would pull me if I short shifted I would slowly pull ahead, ended up I barely one by my front tire being ahead, pretty much even.

Well now I know I want a TC 416. Any 4 stroke QUAD that can keep up with a 2 stroke dirtbike that is that quick is amzing. If he was running stock gearing he would most likely beat me.

Hope you liked this drag racing episode, if you didnt oh well no one made you read it, you read it b/c you were interested.

BTW on a track with my 400 I walk all over this guy.

Well...I'm glad that I'm not the only one that spent 4k or more on the motor alone...did you get a pipe yet?

Yep bought a T-4 and cut 6 inches off. Loud as crap I belive its louder than a TC No real power gains to speak of.

I got the same motor and all the same crap done to it and it flys. But I like the Lectron carb it brings the whole motor alive, the only complate I have about it is you have to take it off and clean it about every other race because its a flatside and sometimes it can stick if you don't clean it but other than that the carb is nice and I would not run anything else with my TC engine. All the componets on the TC engine are made to work all together thats how tom degisns it and he only uses the best.

I luv you Chris:D im so glad to hear something good about the Lectron!!! Chris if you dont mind me asking,,how much you got in that TC 416. i see this guy talking about $4000 in the motor and I know that must be BS. I called Tom up and told him i want the fastest EX in the world and the fastest he can make and he said either 490 or 505 and i said go ahead and do the 505! The complete 505 with absolutely everything you can do is running me $2800. How does that guy have 4k in a 416?????

04-10-2002, 09:47 AM
4k is a little much I think,,,,I believe chris29's motor was about $1,500 worth and yes it is a rocket ship,,I still wouldn't want the lectron,,but hands down the TC 416 rips tits...

Evan
04-10-2002, 11:18 AM
Yeah I thought it sounded fishy too since a full Sparks 416 is around 3k. But that just what the previuos owner said. The guy I raced paid 5000 for it, its a 99 with all that motor work 2 sets of tires/rims several sets of plastic, well basically when he bought it it filled up fullsize truck. I still aint sure he got a real good deal. I wouild rather have suspension than motor.

04-10-2002, 12:26 PM
$4000 is probably what he has in everything. Thats the only thing I could guess!!!
Hey Rico,,,is Chris faster?????:D

Nope he's saying both. Rico sits around drinking beer and talking about how he's going to kick my ***, but never seems to be able to.

Oh yeah and $4,000 dollars in a 416 isn't possible. Not unless they turned the thing in to a liquid cooled 416. I pay around $1,500 for the woods.
The only thing I recomend the Lectron carb to is racing. If you ride woods or anything like that you don't want it. It is only best at racing.

04-10-2002, 04:18 PM
That makes since. Tom builds "racing" engines!!! I do play ride also though! Am i going to have problems?? Do you have problems with yours idling?? Have you had any other problems???

chris29
04-10-2002, 10:42 PM
No I don't think you will have any problems. I go riding all the time, I just saying if you stickly ride woods and thats it I don't recommend it. But if you race you will love it It ain't that bad in the woods just stay on the gas on hang on. Idieling it does not do. You don't let it sit there an idle this goes for any engine even stock. You let an engine sit there an idiel and you will find yourself buying some new rocker arms. You wont have no problems with it bogging down and dieing though it just won't sit there on idile you have to blib the gas.

hey chris29 what all is involved in mounting the lectron carb. Is it just the airbox move that ive heard about or is there any other trick i should know about. How about throtle pull is same as stock or will i have to modify the stock thumb throttle.

ChadEXer
04-11-2002, 09:04 AM
If im not mistaken the only other thing that has to be done is grind in the throttle housing so the throttle will open wider. is this right Chris??? I had my buddy build me an aluminum airbox that is 1 inch longer to fit the carb better!!
I cant wait to get mine!

04-11-2002, 09:21 AM
Chris wears pink riding gear...:D

His website is under construction!!

Will he ever update that site? I check back all the time thinking maybe hes updated it. Seems like he turning away a lot of people if you ask me because so many people use the internet to research products and just wanna look. Probably even saving him time without having to talk on the phone as much when the information would be on the site.

chris29
04-15-2002, 05:56 PM
Dude he is a very busy man. He has got to work on engines all day long he can't just sit and play on the internet like us or he would not make any money. Give it time and the website will be done

Nausty

I was just curious. Just seemed like it should be on the "to do list" you know what i mean?

I didnt do to bad out of the hole in my race last night. I got a 3rd place holshott, but the guy with the 416 wasnt in my division, there were so many 400s there that they had to split us up. This guy with the 416 is not real good at MX racing, but he came in 2nd overall I belive, wished I would have been in his class, might have a chance at winning.

It is funny how the better known or more respected people have lower quality websites or dont even have them. Take TC and Roll design for example. Roll just has a blank page, you would think with all the money they are making off of people(I know a-arms dont cost 800 to build) that they would have a top of the line website. Guess they have their priorites mixed up.

edit- I meant to add-

I think my 400s gonna need a rebuild, I dont have the cash right now for a full TC 416, nor do I have the time seein as how I am racing and there are only 2 weeks between races, nor could I stand to have it down that long. Heres the delema.
When I have it down I would like to put a higher comp piston in, new rings and valve seals(its smoking- I have a feeling the original owner didnt break it in properly) an MX or some very hot cam, maybe a TC MX cam, but do you have to have the rockers hard faced for a MX cam from TC? In 400ex21s sig he has a cam but no hard faced rockers. Any one have any thoughts on this?

NJ300ex
04-15-2002, 09:07 PM
Tc is a drop in. No need to hardface. If your rockers are messed up then just buy new ones. If i were you I would get a 416 high comp JE piston, TC mx cam, rings, valve seals, and gaskets. That will not cost alot at all if you do the work yourself. Do not get porting right now though because if you plan on it getting ported in the future by an engine builder they would rather work on a stock head than one that was already ported.

Evan
04-15-2002, 09:23 PM
Well I didnt really want to bore just yet but that is a good idea. Any idea what all that would run, I have the repair manual, so I can do all the work but the boring. Thats good to know that its a drop in cam.

04-16-2002, 10:15 AM
Just get a high comp stock bore piston,,with the cam,,,that'll help out a bunch..

And yeah TC needs to get his webpage up and goin,,,it's not like Tom is designing the page,,he just pays the bill for somebody elst to do it,,,I guess some of these guys haven't figured out the benefit of the internet yet..

I just got off the phone with someone at TC and talked them about a drop in MX Cam called the 926 and the 924. The 924 being a straight MX/TT cam and the 926 being a MX/ and play riding cam. The 926 cam cost $189.00. I forgot to ask about the lift and duration on these cams, does anyone know what they are? Thanks

Evan
04-17-2002, 10:27 PM
Anyone know TCs number? Reckon he would sell me some kind of kit, like say exchange my head for a already worked head(valves, springs, ported etc) plus the MX cam and a 416 high comp piston.

ChadEXer
04-18-2002, 08:35 AM
You can call and ask. i posted his number at the top of this page!
Everytime i call TC Tom answers the phone, is he the only one there!!!!

Well I talked to Tom
He says that the rev boxes are worth it. Hate to say it but I think the only thing they are worth is to blow up your motor.
He said that larger valves, stiffer springs just create more friction and didnt reccomend them.
I asked about porting ande he said that it wasnt that big of a deal unless you a had decked out motor, and then it might give you 10% more, well how do you get a decked out motor, if you talk me out of buying half the stuff.
He said the 425 was best for MX.
Also I was asking about the cams he sells, well one is everything from MX to trail, the other is for MX and TT, so I said so the MX/TT is better, right, he said if you were riding both of them in 2 seprate bikes you couldnt tell a difference, so get the MX/allround cam.
He likes the lectrons, says the 36mm is equal to a 39mm FCR, I didnt ask him about the troubles they have.
Well based on what he told me, I think I need a 425 piston, MX cam, and a 38mm lectron, and a revbox. I told him I didnt want a rev box, so he said 577 for cam, carb, piston/rings. Do you think this is worth it for power, I need a rebuild bad, my oil is on low just after 4 tanks of gas.

chris29
04-22-2002, 04:16 PM
I think the rev box is worth it. I find my self switching through the gears to fast because I rev out to quick. I would not get the unlimited rev but the one that goes up to a certain point.

Evan
04-22-2002, 04:30 PM
his are unlimted. that might be a benifit, but I dont like to rev 4strokes like 2strokes, 1. its not good for high rpm, 2. there is not any power at higher rpm, 3. easier to blow your motor.
I try to shift as little as possible, use the torque and power of the 4stroke.

ChadEXer
04-22-2002, 04:56 PM
X-Rider,,i think it would be worth it!!! i bet it would haul!!!!
i will probably keep my stock rev box on but i will try it with both to see how it is. I dont want to blow up that expensive motor!!! Tom is putting a 38mm lectron on mine which he says is better than the 41mm FCR!
