Round three of the GNCC series headed due north to scenic Morganton, North Carolina to the campground of "Steele Creek". Nestled in the mountains and bringing the racers back to typical XC style terrain, this round looked to set the stage for another epic battle in the Pro class as Bill Ballance is already out to a lead over hard charging Chris Borich. Borich's crew had discovered some power in their Curtis Sparks engine and wanted badly to get thier first win of 2007.
The weather looked to be almost perfect for the saturday event as the pits began to fill up friday afternoon. This round is one of the most scenic stops of the series as a beautiful stream cuts the facility in half giving incredible views of this part of the country.
The battle between the "Killer B's" is ongoing heading into round #3, with no less vigor then when we headed out of Georgia. Walking the pits friday evening I spotted John Rowlings busily giving Borich's race machine a good going over. A few simple questions revealed nothing new, plain old race prep and a bit of luck. The new found power in the Sparks engine could be exactly what was needed to take the sting out of one member of the "Killer B's"
William Yokely is eagerly awaiting his chance to get his Kawasaki backed KFX450 on the podium. His new colorful rig drew alot of attention from fans as he made his way down the long road to the pit area.
Sound inspections are back, and will be performed on random classes each round with no prior notice to which class will be held to the AMA imposed 99 decible sound limit.
The cool mountain air was refreshing as night claimed the valley. I decided to check on the hard working vendors and once again the boys at Maxxis were hard at it changing tires for racers.
