    Oakland Round Koontz Series 9-17-06

A beautiful day as far as the weather goes with temperatures in the low 80's and plenty of bright sunshine greeted the riders of the Koontz Series as this round headed into Oakland, Maryland for a full day of racing. This was the first Koontz race this season at this location and the riders were excited about hitting up a course that had not been pounded by racing activity.

Paul Koontz, the man behind this series knows all to well that the young riders are the future of our sport. He was one of the first on the east coast to offer classes for 50, 70 and 90cc riders to learn the skills needed to one day become champions! Paul saw the value in adding a 13-15 Youth class limited to 300cc for this season and while the class entries have not been record breakers, it is gaining acceptance and growing.

Arriving a bit later then I had planned, I was unable to capture the morning race featureing the 50 through 90 classes. I did see the finish as Kyle Riley ripped his way to the overall aboard his Cobra!

Riders of varying skill levels compete in the Koontz Series, you never really know who your up against as you look over the field

My own son was having the jitters about being out racing with adults. I tried my best to add no pressure to him and told him to relax and have fun. I do not think it helped

The national anthem was on the loud speakers as I looked over Brent Sturdivant's shoulder to catch a glimpse of old glory

The waiting may seem like an eternity, but when it is time for business, it happens fast. The "10 seconds" call was given and we were about to get under way!

A class was on deck and it was Zac Phillips racing to the first turn to grab the holeshot. Brent Sturdivant was charging hard from the outside

Rounding the first turn, these racers were in for a seriously rough course between them and the end of the race
