a 426 kit bores into your stock sleeve more then a lot of people like. that is why u see a lot of 416's. u can build a good 416 for $600 while a good 440 will be double that usually. the 440 will be faster but u have to build more reliablity into them. a 416 will rev faster... i would do a 416 then when u need a re-bore go to a 426 then up to 440 because u have to resleeve for a 440. while u have the motor torn down, put in a good cam. with a drop in cam u will not have to replace the rockers or valve springs. only of course if ur stockers have wear will u have to. a hotcam or a TC racing cam will work here. if u want a more aggresive cam i like the 479 web cams but expect to pay around 250 for rockers and the same for valve springs and retainers. while the head is apart, get it ported and polished with at least a 3 angle valve job. any compression 10.5:1 or over u will need to use race gas or 50/50. some people say 11:1 but just to be safe. remeber that new pistons are not alwasy the compression they say they are. wiseco is notorious for this. did i forget anything?

i haven't failed, i mearly found 649 ways that didn't work
From what I hear the 416 is way faster
From what I see there allways back there someware
Do a search on this and look at all the info you find, and there is a lot of threads on this. Most of the people that "feel" the 416 is a faster machine either are just repeating what they heard or have been involved with a 440 that was setup wrong.
The need for race fuel is dependant on the actual cylinder pressure and some other factors and is needed only to prevent detonation or preignition etc, and isnt allways a rule for any certain piston comp rating.
Look around the site theres some great info on this.
