I put 2quarts of red cap Mobil-1 in my 400ex and it still only reads right at the bottom of the dipstick. I changed the filter and had the clutch cover off so it should be totally empty. Dont want to overfill. Thanks for the help.

start it up and let it idle for about 30 seconds and turn it off.
Check the oil level again and add until it is full. Then repeat the 1st step and check the oil level again and you will be fine.

96 12v built to the hilt and constantly broke
you won't need to let it sit and idle for 5 full minutes. most of the oil is pumped back into the engine fairly quick so you get an accurate reading on the dipstick.
