Got a couple ETon Rovers. One is a Rover Short Bars which is the blue one. Both have dead batteries but that didn't stop me from trying to start them up. Jumped the Blue Rover Short Bars with my Land Rover and she started right up. Only runs with choke, but that's and easy fix. Need to clean out the jets, especially the pilot. Will report back once this has been done.
Red Rover, jumped it and nothing, not even a click. Gotta check the solenoid on that one. Not too many of these out there and especially on the west coast. Had to drive 3 hours each way to grab these ones today. Hopefully these are easy fixes as I wanted to bring these to the next desert trip in a couple weeks.
Blue Rover battery shows 12.8 now. Looks like they might just needed to be charged. Got the charger on the Red Rover now.
I had cleaned the jets last night, but still burbles then dies once I turn of the choke. Gas may be old too. Draining both tanks today and put some fresh stuff in. Gotta head to work. More to come.
Getting closer. Drained the gas from the Blue Rover and put in a new fuel filter. Put new gas and she fires right up. Still got bog once the choke is off. Need to pull the carb again and clean it better. I opened the diaphram and cleaned the plunger and needle, got better but still bogs. I can run thru the rpms with choke on.
Red Rover battery is gone. Had it charging all night and it only holds about 6.5 volts. Got bad cells in it. Ordered a new one as well as a couple new NGK spark plugs. Sucks it gets dark so early so working on these gets limited time.
Found this thread googling about the bogging. Seems like I am not the only one. He found the a/f which I didn't see on initial jets cleaning. I am going to take a pic of the jets so I know what size they are. As I get older, I fail to see those small markings now.
Drained the tank on the red rover. Removed the seat. New fuel line and filter. Cleaned out the carburetor. It's an aftermarket Keihin. Tried to see the jet sizes but both were unmarked. Reassembled and put the other good battery in. Tried to start with key, no joy. Jumped the solenoid and she fired right up. This carb has a auto choke and the electrical is disconnected, so it runs real rich. Going to trace a key switched pos and hook it up.
Tried to put it in gear, she dies. Knew this had to be related to the no key start as you have to depress the brake. Looked at a parts list and there is a switch on the brake master cylinder. Removed the front plastic and found it had a broken wire. Reconnect and now she fires right up using the key, while depressing the brake. Put it in drive and reverse, and now she moves forward and reverse.
Ordered a new foam filter as it was missing. Removed the broken hacked hitch from it as well. That's it for tonight.
