2006 LTZ50--NO SPARK AND THEN SOME

Tyler started his sister's 2006 LTZ 50 and rode for a little while then came in the house and said it just bogged out & won't start. He had the choke on when he was riding but it did not foul the plug. I put in a new plug just to check and there was no spark . SO DUMB DAD DECIDES HE IS GOING TO START IT BY HOOKING UP THE CHARGER & THE LITTLE BLACK PACKET ( WHAT IS IT?) UNDER THE SEAT MADE A POP AND STARTED SMOKING. So where to go from here, what parts do I definitely need to replace and any ideas why it may have lost spark to start with?

looked up the diagram and it was the CDI that popped & smoked. But it wasn't getting spark before this so I will replace the CDI but what else?

Maybe the coil too?
