x2, xr cams work, but just toss a hotcam in there, or an hrc xr cam, but i think those are similar to a stg 2 hc
what would be good about an xr cam? arent they the same? every motor component that i buy pretty much is for xr400 or 400ex. well i guess its a dirtbike its prolly got a more radical cut to it than stock ex because it wont need as much torque because of less weight, but makes more power up top? something like that even close? or am i way off?

The xr cam is just slightly more radical that the ex stocker , and was one of the first upgrades for the ex , along with switching to the thinner xr headgasket to slightly boost compression.
I just threw a hotcam stage2 in mine.
me too a stg 2 cam is quite a bit more radical cut than stock and showed a real nice gain in power. xr head gaskets are thinner? i have a cometic gasget kit i got a week ago thats labeled as xr400 or 400ex gaskets. are you talking stock gasket is thinner?

yeah , the stock xr400 headgasket is thinner than the stock ex , resulting in a slightly higher compression ratio ( ie....... if the stock compression ratio was 9:1 going with the xr400 gasket should result in 9.5:1 compression by all reports). The gasket sets would be the same except for the headgaskets.
I recomend looking in the tech archives here , there is a wealth of knowledge that would serve you well.
