I have done it. If I remember correctly, I had to add some shims in on the between the sprocket and the seal shim, which kept the brake caliper in the correct position but took up the slack. If Im not mistaken, I think I used Chrysler pinion gear shims because they were the correct size. You can measure the axle dia. and find a dealership tech or anyone who has done a lot of rear axle setups in automobiles and they will give you some shims (each gear set comes with an extra 20 of them).

BTW, you cannot put them on the bearing side, but they need to go between the shim the seal rides on and the sprocket hub.

A 450R axles will not properly work in a 400 carrier, but like mentioned before, it can be made to work with shims. However, if you decided to use a 450 carrier, it is too narrow for the swinger, therefore you would have to use a 450 swinger before as well. IMO, your best bet is to get a 400 axle.

I made a very detailed post about this a long time ago. The 400ex axle carrier is actually longer than the 450R carrier. The axles are not the same. I believe you can actually use the entire swingarm, axle carrier and axle if you wanted to, but not really worth the trouble IMO.

Why can't you use the 450r axle too?
