    Dog training tips/ideas

Looking to get my dogs out in the field this year. I have two purebred brittanys. One is almost two and the other is 17 months. Both are good obedient and smart dogs and have great hunting blood lines. Looking to get them on pheasants. I have never trained a dog before for hunting so not sure of techniques or tricks. I been reading alot about it and have been running them alot to keep them in shape. Have had them around guns and have them both broke of that with no problems. Anyone have any tips or ideas?

nice looking dogs! I am partial to GSP's I have 2 of them but train with a couple britts. A good start for a beginner would be to try and find your local NAVHDA chapter

    http://www.navhda.org/

try to hook up with some other handlers and you will catch the bug. Introduce them to birds, the more the better and it will all fall into place.

Thanks for site. Pointers are good dogs too. My family has had Brittanys before and thats how I got started on them. We were looking for a midsize family first dog. Something the boss could handle easily if she needed but the fact that I can hunt with them was a plus! I have talked to a couple trainers and they pretty much said the dogs dont really need much training at all if the blood lines are good enough. Im the one who needs to be trained on how to use them!

i grew up training dogs and the 3 biggest things are

    1. whoa board - teaches them to stay on point
    2. retrieving
    3. get them on live birds

alot of the dogs ive seenare actually late bloomers. ive had several that didnt fare to well in the field until about their 3-4th year and all of a sudden they could do it all. but the biggest thing they helps them more than anything is being out in the field with other dogs that are already trained. the dogs pick up on this stuff very quickly and they need to get the real experience, not just training in your yard

The reason most people fail instead of succeed is that they trade in what they want most for what they want at the moment.
