the class im looking at racing is mostly 400ex's with porting, piston, cam, and exhuast. how will my 250r with pipe/silencer,porting, reeds and carb stand in comparison around the track?

You'll smoke them.
A built 250R is so much faster than a built 400ex.
Plus you have the advantage of liquid cooling. Once 400ex's get too hot they start to lose power.
The 250R handles better and is lighter and has a lower center of gravity.

you could be racing a trx 250r with a ****in 538 sabertooth cylinder, and still get smoked. Motor makes very little difference compared to rider experience. I have a ct 310 blank no porting and i have no trouble keeping with the full blown big bore 450's, because of my motor? you ask? no, because i have some track experience.
dont mean to blow your thread, but you will be perfectly fine,
if this is your first race, plan on getting last. if you dont, your racing in a class to easy for you.

so you just got a 250r? it just seems kind of odd you have been racin a 250 for 4 years and now your asking if it will keep with a 400, lol.

no let me rephrase lol. i race schoolboy on a 300ex. i have for 3 years going on 4. i cannot afford a 450 and my 250r has just been sitting around since i wasn't old enough to ride it. now that im old enough to ride in 15+ i would like to ride my 250r in that while still racing schoolboy. because i would like to get more racing in in a weekend

If you've been racing for a while then you already know that motocross racing is 95% rider. You'll do fine on the 250R.
400EX...good for trails...not so good for racing...
Yeah, water cooling is a huge advantage-in terms of weight and leaner jetting options.
If you hold a heavily-finned, air-cooled cylinder in one hand and a water-cooled one in the other, there's a big difference right there in weight.
