Question smoke issue: kawasaki kvf 650 v twin

02 or 04 kvf 650 v twin. not used very much, sat for a long time and all last winter long, went to start it up in the spring, idle was normal, but extreme amount of white smoke pouring out of the exhaust. ran it in neutral for 10-20 minutes, smoke not as thick towards the end, but still smoking real bad. quite sure the heads and gaskets are fine, the compression is good. the fuel may be washing the cylinders down which may be causing the excessive smoke??
we know there is a good amount of fuel going into the crankcase, because you can smell gas in the oil and on the stick. also oil is building up inside the breather box.
any suggestions on what is going on here? is this a carburetor issue, or more along the lines of valves or valve seals? any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

has anybody out there gone through the procedure of rebuilding their carbs? any advice on this..we know it's an intricate machine....if anybody out there has a service manual free or cheap that would be a great help as well...
