I just bought an LT250R and was curious how I could tell what year it was. I was told it was an 86 but want to know for sure when I go to order parts. The same question for the motor, how can I tell what year it is. Thanks

there's a thread a few down from this that is the same. an 85-86 doesn't have the powervalved motor and has case reeds. also it has a blue seat and black nose(at least from the factory it did) also has the round carrier in the swinger. the 87 up are completely different from the 85-86's. check the 10th vin letter if it's 87+ to determine the year.
Also, there is a difference in the 87 engines-you can tell by the reedcage bolts. The 1987 uses five, the 1988-1992 uses six.
