I CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT. I'VE TRIED EVERYTHING I CAN THINK OF.
CARB CLEANED BY DEALERSHIP 2 MONTHS AGO (ULTRASONIC) WAS RUNNING GREAT WHEN I GOT IT BACK. HAVEN'T STARTED IT IN 3 WEEKS
FRESH GAS
CLEANED AND RE-OILED AIR FILTER
TOOK CARB APART AGAIN AND CLEANED TOP TO BOTTOM PULLED OUT JETS/AIR SCREW/IDLE SCREW(ALTHOUGH IT WAS CLEAN AS A WHISTLE)
REPLACED SPARK PLUG JUST BECAUSE I HAD A SPARE
CHOKE IS WORKING PROPERLY.
BACK UP KICK TURNS MOTOR OVER.
STARTER TURNS MOTOR OVER (CAN FEEL EXHAUST)
FULLY CHARGED BATTERY (UNTIL TRYING TO START IT FOR 10 MINUTES) KEPT ON BATTERY TENDER
CHECKED THE RELAY UNDER THE SEAT AND THE FUSE NEXT TO THE BATTERY. (BOTH GOOD)
MY NEIGHBOR CAME OUT TO HELP ME, AND THINKS IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH NO SPARK. THE SPARK PLUG WIRE GOES TO A CYLINDER THAT HAS TWO WIRES. ONE IS BLACK AND GROUNDED TO THE CHASIS, THE OTHER IS WHITE/RED STRIPE AND GOES TO THE REV BOX. I THINK IT SHOULD BE GETTING POWER WHEN THE ENGINE IS CRANKING BUT IT'S NOT.
COULD I HAVE A BAD REV BOX?? DO THOSE THINGS JUST GO BAD OUT OF THE BLUE?? SHOULDN'T ONE OF THE WIRES GOING INTO THE REV BOX BE HOT?? IT SEEMS AS IF NONE OF THEM HAVE POWER AT ALL??
I'M SO FRUSTRATED!!! I DON'T WANT TO TAKE IT TO THEM DEALER FOR THE TO CHARGE $70 JUST TO LOOK AT IT, AND ANOTHER OVERINFLATED PARTS/SHOP CHARGE.
I had an 05 and had a similar problem. I'm not sure if the 03 is the same or not. On the 05 you had to engage the brake for it to start. That sensor or cable was not engaging enough for it to start. i just adjusted that and problem was solved.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLY. IT IS THE SAME ON THE 2003 AS WELL. WITHOUT THE BRAKE PULLED IN, IT WON'T TURN OVER. MY PROBLEM IS THAT IT TURNS OVER FOREVER, BUT JUST WON'T KICK UP AND GO.
Well first, did you check the ignition wire for any spark? If you've got no spark, it's most likely the REV or CDI box...CDI boxes do go bad all the time. Could be a number of things to make it go bad. My friend just spent a poo load of money trying to get his Z400 to run, only to find out that his power washing finally infiltrated the box and shorted it out.
If you can, find someone who has the same model as you and try his/her CDI box...a cheap diagnosis. It's plug and play...
WELL, I PULLED THE PLUG AND HIT THE START BUTTON TO TURN IT OVER. NO SPARK. DO THE SPARK PLUG THREADS HAVE TO BE GROUNDED FOR THE SPARK TO JUMP ACROSS??
I DIDN'T REALIZE THAT THE CDI'S WERE A COMMON PROBLEM. I DO POWERWASH MY QUADS AS WELL.
SO WOULD IT BE BENEFICIAL TO REPLACE THE CDI WITH ONE OF THE AFTERMARKET ONES, OR STICK WITH THE STOCK?? I DON'T PLAN ON DOING MUCH FOR PERFORMANCE TO THE QUAD. I MODIFIED THE AIRBOX SLIGHTLY FOR MORE AIRFLOW, AND HAVEN'T DECIDED IF I WILL DO AN EXHAUST SYSTEM OR NOT.
No, the plug does not have to be grounded. As for the box, it's your choice. With an after market box, it won't have a rev limiter and will give you some higher revs/top end...maybe a little more spark.
THE REASON I ASKED IF THE THREADS HAD TO BE GROUNDED - I PULLED MY PLUG WIRE ON ANOTHER QUAD AND HOOKED UP THE PLUG FROM THE PRED 90 - TURNED IT OVER AND NO SPARK, BUT WHEN I TOUCHED THE THREADS TO THE ENGINE BLOCK, I GOT PLENTY OF SPARK. PROBLEM ON THE PREDATOR WAS THE PLUG WIRE IS SO SHORT, AND THERE REALLY WASN'T A GOOD SPOT TO GROUND IT TO. EVERYTHING IS PAINTED HEAVILY OR POWDRECOATED. I WRAPPED A WIRE AROUND THE THREADS AND WRAPPED THE OTHER END AROUND MY NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL, BUT STILL NO SPARK.
I WENT AHEAD AND ORDERED A NEW CDI BOX. SHOULD BE HERE FRIDAY. I HOPE THAT IS IT. I WILL KEEP YOU POSTED, AND THANKS FOR THE HELP!!
