    Question Top speed of the 2006 polaris outlaw

    I finally got a new atv and i got a 2006 polaris outlaw! This thing is awesome! I dont quite know the top speed though. Could someone please let me know cause im just curious! I've had it to top speed but I dont know how fast i was going. Thanks!

    The top speed of an outlaw with the stock gearing is 82 mph.
    '06 Outlaw 500- HMF Bill Balance full exhaust, ITP MXR6 tires all arround, ynojet kit, AC Racing Nerf Bars, Fasst Co. Flexx Bars, Vortech twist throttle.

    inccorrect. The outlaw 525's top speed is 76 and it is faster than the 500! (that's Polaris's claimed speed.) From my experience w/ GPS, Predator: 74-76 Outlaw 500 70-73

    Lol, not even close. I have a k&n,15 t, jetted, and PP duals and i only hit 77. Sotck i would say arround 65-70.

    I did some calculations using the gear ratios of each machine... This was mainly to show gear split on another forum, but it seems valid here. Read the info regarding my basis for calculation and stuff, b/c it's not necessarily set in stone, i think it's all pretty dang close tho...

    NOTES:
    1) The KTM's speeds were omitted b/c i don't want to start bash sessions if i don't actually have data on the machine, however if anyone would like to know i calculate its top speed to be a tiny touch higher the Pred, but there are a few problems with the calculation that i think make it not valid for the 525, namely i don't know how far it will wind out in 5th. The top speed of the pred is not necessarily limitted by the rev limiter as it will not really rev all the way out, (in my 200lb exerience on flat pavement, it won't quite hit the rev limitter) This also kinda hurts the outlaw 500's top speed calculation, but it's close and percentage wise, the gear split is accurate.
    2) I assumed as a basis for calculation: the Predator's top speed was 75mph and this occured at 9100RPM (which is the rev limit.) i realize this is not PRECISELY true, but it's the closest i can come up with, because variences in this assumption are far too many to account for and people would be pissed at me for being so absolutely sure, what the pred's top speed is when they're sure their cousins goes a hundred according to grandpa's old ford's speedometer.
    3) The Outlaw's top speed is actually a tiny bit over 70 in my experience, so obviously using the pred's top speed for calculation of the outlaws has some minor flaws, (coverred in the last 2 notes). However the purpose of these calculations was to show gear split, not really top speed.

    Interpretation:
    As you can see, the gap between 1-2-3-4 on the close box Pred is MUCH closer! it's very tight, and very quick through those gears. You can also see that gear 4 on the wide splits gears 4-5 on the close, which is why it is the one gear which (if you can keep it there for long enough) will allow the wide to walk away from the close (both in theory and in practice, we've performed lots of experiments, conditions have to be right, but the difference is profound in wide open, flat field racing). hope all this information helps

    Another intersting fact:
    As you can see from the data above, the '07 Outlaw' transmission seems to resemble more the wide ratio tranny than a close ratio one with a lower fifth. I think the '07 Tranny would be much nicer for wide-open areas, for the reasons stated above, but the '06 might get it in tight woods. just an interesting difference, probably not profound, but were it me, i'd prefer the '07's box. Anyway, good luck w/ those numbers, post here with disputes as i'm sure there will be some...

    P.S. Isn't it nice to have engineers in the forums?

    EDIT: The table should be viewed with smallest text size, under the "View" tab in your browser... I will update this table w/ more information once i get it from the Outlaw 525, and if my friend w/ the '06 Outlaw gets a trail-tech computer, we can determine what RPM it hits its top speed at and i can use that as a basis and finally remove all the error from my calculations... until then, that is a pretty good estimate.

    In reality top speed is irrelievant for most. Many rarely get to top speed on a quad. What is important is horsepower and torque. Its how quick you get to that speed that makes it fun.

    *agrees* there are very few places to actually use anything over about 67 mph... if you can push at least 62 i usually tell people they can keep up on even the most wide open sections of the trails in northern MI, if they know their machine...

    Very true. Mine does almost dead on the money 60mph at 7000rpm in 4th and 74mph at 7400rpm in 5th on the dyno with stock gearing and tires. I have the 15t now and gained a few mph from that but Ive never, never been pinned in 5th anywere but on pavement and rarely in 4th on the trails. Mine radared at 76mph when it was stock except a slipon so it probably would do 81-ish now with my power and 15t.
