My wife has an '05 Outlander 400. She loves it! In fact, she let me ride it in a Hare Scrambles race that was held in this area this summer. I not only finished first in the Utility Class, I ended up placing 61st overall out of 94 finishers in the ATV classes!
Four of the 6 utility class machines placed and the utility machines started last of all the ATV classes. I passed MANY sport quads.

I think the 400 Outlander is an excellent machine with very good suspension and a surprisingly powerful and capable motor. But that's just my humble opinion.
The Good;
My '04 400 will run on top with most any 500 Utility. A good running 500 single may be just a tick faster on top. There is not a 400 - 450 utility that has ever beaten it.
Great ride and handling once I firmed up the front springs just a bit.
Reliability has been great and so is the fuel economy.
The Bad;
I have broken 3 shifter levers. Mostly from plowing, they are so brittle they end up snapping. (this is one part the dealer always has in stock) And I never try to force or jam it when it doesn't want to go in gear.
1 set of universal joints.
1 belt, and am due again.

Had one since 2004 and really no complaints. The 4x4 went out on it once from accidentally turning it on while spinning the tires, but it was under warranty. Also, for some reason it started fouling plugs if it sits for a little while. Other than that, its been an awesome quad. Faster than most 500's, and rides better too. Overall, the quality is great.

dad has had one for 3 years. its a 2005. i ride it though... 2000 of the 2100 miles that are on it have been put on it by me... lol... anyway... pulls great has no problem with a 3000lb trailer... well in low it dont... in high it has trobles gettin it movin...
love the quad for its size and it has aweseome power for a 400...
the only drawback is the throttle response... with it being carburated it has no response at all... you floor it and about 3 secondsd l8tr it is puttin out its max... not right away like a fuel injected quad.
other then that i love it and nothing has went wrong with it.

When It was new it got changed at 200, 500, and 1000 miles. Conventional oil and filter. At the 1000 mile mark I went with full synthetic oil. With nearly 5000 miles the engine is just as strong as ever.

o i was reading your sig... it says u cant find anything in the aftermarket for the 400... thats casue they dont make anything for it... they musta figuered if ppl wanted power they woulda just bought a 800... im sure that is y they dint make anything for perforamnce for the 400's... but there is gun holders and bags and stuff like that... thats about it...
if you want a lil more power out of it... take the screw out that is behind the throttle that stops the throttle at a certain point... i did that and noticed a pretty big diffrence...
one question... hooked onto dads boat last night just for fun... it weighs about 9000 lbs... hooked the 400 onto it and it did a burn out!!!!!!!!!! in gravel of course... but it barelydoes a burnout with me on there... how can it do one with a huge boat on there... and the shocks were like a 1/4 inch from bottoming out... so there was about 400-500 lbs of tounge weight... but it still did a burnout... how can it do that... it dnt have that much trq does it???
by the way wat are the power and trq numbers for the outlander 400? anyone know?
