Well if you dont wanna change the piston you can always put in a camshaft (hotcams stage 1 preferably), K&N/Uni filter, a good exhaust full or slip on HMF, White Brothers, Curtis Sparks, and a Curtis Sparks advanced timing key that will advance the timing another 6 degrees. The stock 400ex has 28HP so my guess is that you should gaine another 5HP or so? You can always put a 14 tooth sprocket upfront to make it get up to speed a little quicker.

Personally if your on the search for alot of power, I would just invest in a YFZ450, TRX450, or LTR450 and save yourself the headache.

what they said, but get a rod and like a 12:1 piston, or maybe higher
port and polish will help too.....maybe a carb also

The way I see it if you can buy a 450 high performance and have a fast machine to start with your far better off than dumping a couple grand into a 400ex, and sacrafice reliability. Just my opinion, though.
