Well I am starting a build on a R. I have a question though before I buy a frame.
Will every year frame bolt up to every year motor? Or is there certain things that won't work together? Thanks a lot. can't wait

motor will work on all frames, as you will find in searches.
86 is supposedly the heaviest and strongest(more gussetting)
87 is like the 86 only no gussetting
88-89 uses a different motor mounting point for the rear motor mount, but it only effects the swingarm.
the 86-87 swingarms front pivot tubes are 2 pc, with a motor mount inbetween.
88-89 the tube is 1 solid pc, and the engine mounts to a solid frame mount.
86-87 uses an appx 1" longer swingarm also. I prefer this one for hillclimbing, but most like the 88-89 length for MX stuff.
I also understand that the a-arms are different on the 86-87 than the 88-89, but forget what the whole story is.
86=shortrod
87-89=longrod
Please correct me if I'm wrong on anything.
Jester, you got all that right. Some other differences are, the 86/87 foot pegs are diffent, than the 88/89. The plastic, and seat pan. The 86/87 hubs are 2 pieces, the 89 uses a tapered spindle shaft, and the 88, uses the same berrings, but instead of being tapered, it just has an edge that goes stright up to compensate for the different diameter berrings. There are some other minor differences, but generaly all parts will interchange from any year to any year. Some parts might need a little modding to work, but most will work.
