how do you know when the engine is warm?

How long should I wait till the engine is warm to start riding? Should I wait a few minutes or when the fan comes on? Thanks.

I feel the head/cylinder area with my bare hand. When it's warm/hot, I know I'm ready. That is what you are wanting to "warm up"
