The lip goes into the seal on the carrier. Make sure it is the right carrier, and that the lip is against the bearing.

My frind had the same exact problem and it turned out his hub was messed up and had a little chip in it but it was hard to see so he got another stock axle from a friend that alreday had the sprocket hub on it and it went in perfect so check the hub for wear and by the way those hubs r pressed on the stock axles and r extremely hard 2 get off lol.
