    Should a Raptor smoke?

I have a 2002 Raptor I'm thinking about buying with supposely low hours on it. I noticed that it has a slight gray smoke coming out of the exhaust when I rev it up.....is this normal.....it's not bad but it is noticable. The bike runs great but I was just wondering if this was normal for a raptor.....or if I was looking at a topend job soon.

Geez man, don't be a tool. If he knew do you really think he'd be asking. You once were inexperienced just like he is. Help people with your knowledge don't be an a#$.

It depends. It could just be running rich. White smoke is bad and blue smoke is bad. White is usually anti-freeze/water, and blue smoke is oil in your cylinder. Grey/black could simply be a rich condition.

Still have the Raptor, I was thinking it might be running rich too, maybe a clogged air filter or something. I don't think it was taken care of too well...I'll take a real good look at it before I decide to buy it or not.

I've been on 250r's forever and didn't know how these new fourstrokes were supposed to burn....it seems like there's practically no rings on the YFZ, wasn't sure what knd of ring setup these Raptors have....

Personally I'd never hop off an R onto a raptor, but that is just my opinion. I think you would be alot more happy on say a Z400 or one of the newer race thumpers. Raptors can handle well, but not without alot of suspension and geometry adjustments.

the way i figure it, no matter what color smoke it is, i would use it as an excuse to "rebuild" the motor and just happen to put in a high comp piston... flynbryan is right in the diagnosis of smoke colors. does it have any work done to it? do the screws on the carb look like they have been messed with? is there a ton of crap in the exhaust canister?
